ADWLauncher EX 1.3.3.5 and Android Market 10 billion app downloads!

Update 1.3.3.55! (as usual :P)

I’ve released a minor update with the following additions/fixes:

  • Option to use the dock as overlay: this means your desktop will be full size and the dock will appear over it when you show it.
  • When you trigger the “hide/show dockbar” action/gesture, the new status will be remembered until you show/hide it again. This is like the old option “No dock”!!
  • Option to apply  the old’school color tint to the dock icons
  • Fixed the desktop preview triggers
  • Some fixes reported by users

Remember, hopefully tomorrow, ADWLauncher EX will be discounted in the Android Market! Keep an eye here!

Old post:

Hi everyone!

I’ve been working hard last months to make a nice update to all those ADWEX users out there celebrating its first birthday.
Its now almost a year ago that I released ADWLauncher EX to the market as a premium version of the free  ADW.Launcher. The market success was overwhelming to me and it brought lots of changes to my life (the most important one being my full time job as main android developer).

Today, I’m happy to announce that along the first anniversary of ADWLauncher EX, Google is making a great celebration too: 10 billion downloads in the Android Market!!.
This provided me the opportunity to lower the price of my app for the next days so more and more people can join us in our first anniversary!

So, yes, ADWLauncher EX will be at 0.10€ in the market in the next few days!

Just check the Android Market home page daily to see when the promotion goes live!

And that’s not everything! I’ve managed to roll out a big update for everyone with the following features/improvements:

  • A new unified Dock bar with both the combined superpowers of the previous ones:

    • Easily drag and drop icons into it.
    • Unlimited icons support with paginated scrolling
    • Options stretch, scale, show reflections, change the background image…
    • Easy icon management by double tapping them.
    •  Action to show/hide the dock at a glance via gestures/launcher actions
  •  Easier and more user friendly folders.

    • Drag a desktop icon over another one to auto create a new folder
    • Visual representation of folder contents with theming support
    • Options to choose how the folder contents scroll and behave like you do with the app drawers
    • Single/multi row auto fitting support
  • New desktop management system while moving items.

    • Easier visualization of desktop and drag operations
    • Easier trash can operation
  • New desktop indicator inspired by IceCream Sandwich

  • Improved compatibility with ICS devices

  • Use of hardware acceleration on specific features when possible.

  • Persistence of the ActionBar visibility on android >3.x tablets by the “hide/show status bar” gesture or launcher action.

  • Usual bug fixes and performance improvements

  • More to come!!!

I wish everyone enjoy the update, the opportunity of getting it at reduced price and… thanks for being there in our first anniversary!!

P.S.- Important: during the Android Market promotion days, I’m not allowed to push updates to the market, so if you find anything weird, a bug, a feature not working as intended… please use the feedback menu under ADWSettings!!

  1. Hi
I have managed to find out that you have removed so called “hidden dock”. Very unfortunate for me as I just needed something like this.
So now the question – is it possible to have dock in landscape mode on the bottom and not on side?
Some suggestions: adding shortcuts to desktop – could you (like in go launcher) add check box which could allow to add more than one app at the same time?
Dock could be scrollable to have more icons on it.
Different settings for columns and rows for desktop in landscape and portrait mode.

    That is for now.

  2. Ok – I can see the scrolling feature – just have to add icons despite of the dock is full. Thanks

    Hi Anders,

Please please please reinstate the option of dual dockbars, the standard 5 + the hidden one. The one dockbar option is great for tablet users, but you’ve really neglected your old school supporters who love the dual system. Almost ever negative rating on the market review is for this reason!

When moving my widgets around and resizing them, I frequently activate some sort of screen/menu lock. This is indicated by a semi-transparent bar in the upper left corner. Once this bar is visible, I am unable to access any menus, make any settings changes or resize or reloacte any icons or widgets.

Can you tell me how to activate and, more importantly, deactivate this feature and explain its purpose? The only way I have found to remove it is by restarting the device.

I really like the unified dock, but launcher actions that you put in the dock to go to specific homescreens or to go to the homescreens preview do not work when you are in the application drawer. Can this bug be fixed?

You know, for this app being out a year, and for all the people I’ve seen complaining about this app streaching the wallpaper more than it should be stretched, you’d think you would fix this. For example, I have a picture of a girl from Waste up, I try and set it as my wallpaper, it comes up with the “grid lines” to highlight the area you want visible (The girl from the waste up), And what I end up with is the girl from the shoulders up. Fix this, and I’d gladly pay for this app as everything else looks awsome.

    Hi

Your launcher is great, but after last update all my docking icon become all white block…. ( Asus Transformer TF101 )

On the previous version my docking is working great.

Is there any hope you will fix this issue ?

I really loved the new folder implementation on the latest but because all my docking icon become white I now restore back the older adw launcher ex…..

Thx and hope adw launcher become better and better ^_^

I bought ADWLauncher EX a couple of months ago. I can no longer ask for a refund but I did uinstall after the last update(s). Nice going.

People, beware of this launcher. The developer will probably kill your layout with his next update.Without warning and without offering a way out.

eMail the dev/author of this launcher and request version 1.3.3.1, its the last GOOD version before he screwed it all up…

I have counted just over 250~ posts both here and reviews on the market calling for the old dockbar, or at least changes to the new dockbar to bring back the old ones behavior, as well reversing the RETARDED changes he made to the desktop…

    he hasnt replied at all…

eMail, get the old version, use a tool to remove it from your market list so it doesnt update… and/or cook it into your own rom… dont count on the author to give a rats ass

ADWLauncher EX 1.3.3.56 is a great launcher with lots of features and highly customizable and absolutely love it. One minor issue: Whenever I update the icon text on the home screen, it sticks until the next reboot. The reboot reverts back to the default app text. For example, for the app “Dolphin Browser HD”, I renamed the text to “Browser” and it sticks but when I reboot, it defaults back to “Dolphin Browser HD”.

I tried three times so far and after time every reboot, the icon text reverts back to the default.

This app is running on CM7 (2.3.7) ROM on Motorola Triumph. Any ideas how to fix it or is there a setting that I am missing? TIA.

    @Fed: Go back to 1.3.3.1…

    • December 19th, 2011 12:58am

Agree with Kerry, and almost everyone else. Been using ADW EX on my NookColor and Nexus One for a while. New update (and quick fix) have broken/removed the ability to recreate a lot of my setup. I didn’t use the hidden dock bar so I can’t complain about that. But I also didn’t use the regular dock so had it hidden, and the desktop expanded. I can still hide it, but the space it took is still unusable. The new update has reduced usable desktop space. Putting widgets/icons on the edges is why I bought ADW EX in the first place (before the .10 promo).

Oh well, if anybody happens to have Titanium Backup you can restore 1.3.3.1 and then “detach from market” (paid feature I believe) to get rid of update notification from the market. You can also extract the old .apk from a nandroid backup (made before the update) using 7zip or something similar, would still need TiBackup to detach though.

@Kerry, @Gilly: Thank you for the info and appreciate it. I bought the latest version from Market and hence don’t have the previous version to fall back to. I hope the developer fixes it and pushes the update so that I don’t have to keep renaming the shortcuts whenever I reboot.

AnderWeb, any ideas whether you are planning to fix it in the next release? Appreciate it if you can make it to the next release. If not, there is always the next one ;)

There is an icon bug when using “Fancy Backgrounds” (Density hack, Custom color, Glossy Backgrounds, New Icons all unchecked), The Icons on the screen sometimes mis-aligns to the right offcenter. Im using an Optimus One w/ Gingerbread 2.3.3. Also appears on my Samsung Galaxy SL w/ Gingerbread 2.3.6. Please Fix.

I purchased EX in the last few days after using the Free version for a year. I have the .56 edition. DroidX Android v2.3.3.
I’ve read through all the comments above.

    Comments 0n Comments…
First of all. Wow! I do not experience the multitude of problems other people report. Dock bar is hidable, etc… Maybe my .56 version fixed some of this? However, I suspect many people simply do not take much time to understand the ADW settings. There are Android users out there who, I’m convinced, should be iPhone users. The balance between providing idiot-proof software and high end featured software squarely lays in the personality, capability, time constraints, and intelligence of the user. People who never crack user guides or tutorials have no hope to succeed with smart software. Here’s my confession. I am on medical disability at home all day… I have the time to learn new stuff. I’ve been a web software developer for many years.

    My Enhancement Requests…
Backup-restore issue. If you backup and restore you will only get your screens back with your icons and positioning. What the process does NOT do is deal with your Catalog configurations, Widgets, Icon edits like name and images. You have to recreate all widgets, catalogs, icon edits.

    My revelations with EX…
Folders. Had no clue what these were. But now, Wow! So useful to unclutter screens. Folders are like sub-screens, placing your app icons just one-more-click away from the screen. For instance, instead of having a 8 direct dial icons for my favorite contacts, I put them in a folder ‘Contacts Favs’ and applied a nice BUUF Folders Pack icon.
Backup-Restore. No workee very well. When fixed to backup everything this will be very powerful recovery tool and everyone should do it after making major their own customizations.

BTW. My research resulted in my opinion that ADW EX is the best featured home replacement application available. Go Launcher, is a close second.

    Best Regards. Jim

    where is the trash can?

    • Kerry
    • December 20th, 2011 12:00am

@James: The “hide” dockbar feature was re-added in .56, however, it acts NOTHING like it did in 1.3.3.1, IE you could now place icons in that are without issue. If you had 1.3.3.1 as I and many other’s did, this update and the 2 prior (or the 3 after 1.3.3.1 if you want to “split hairs”), there is a HUGE loss of functionality, hell theres things that ADW FREE can do that was removed from ADW EX… that says alot… I also liked that with 1.3.3.1 my desktop and app drawer experience was 1:1 in settings, now, the tablet “mode” has lost expansion size on the desktop now… I can no longer mirror my settings across my smartphone and tablet…

@allanbn: the ability to make any changes to the trashcan was removed from all versions AFTER 1.3.3.1… else when you move an icon the screen “shrinks” and the trashcan appears at the top…

@EVERYONE: If you have purchased ADW EX, I strongly suggest that you eMail the developer requesting version 1.3.3.1 if you are not happy with the new versions, once you have the old version, simply use Titanium Backup to remove ADW EX’s entry from the Android Market (preventing it from updating, on purpose, automatically, or even accidentally). If he fails to reply, im sure you can find it elseware.

As a long time adw ex user, I’m really disappointed now I have to find an alternative to it.

The main reason is that it seems the author has made unilateral choices that are killing all adw best features.

I just don’t want adw without the hidden bar. It’s the feature I was using adw for. You say that most people were asking it to be removed. I don’t believe you. I searched a lot and almost no one was asking that.

I’ve switched to golauncher. Because it gives something adw no longer deals with: choice.

    Hello,
I’m writing this to tell you that i love your adw launcher ex but it keeps restarting every Time i try to use it. It does a blank homescreen with no widgets or shortcuts and in the dockbar says “loading” and if i press the home button (wich i set to default to open the app drawer), it is empty and has just the same “loading” thing. It wouldn’t be a very vigilia problem if it wouldn’t happen alla the times. Please tell me what to do i paid for it… for now i’ll use the adw launcher but i wanna use the EX ;) (my phone is a galaxy gio with a 2.3.4 rom).
    thank you!

I am having similar crashing problems as others. I was using your 1.3.3.1 version on both a Bionic and Asus Transformer for a couple months and it was pretty solid. Occasional FC but very usable. Personally I like the new unified doc and especially love that folders can wrap icons in the latest version.

On 1.3.3.56 the bionic over time the screen lag will increase and the program will slow down. Don’t know if this is a memory leak or what. If I manually restart then it is fine for a while.

On the transformer the program will automatically restart itself and redraw the screen from scratch many times after I exit an application (market, opera …).

I really want to keep using ADW since I think it is by far the best home screen launcher but need to have some stability.

    Thanks for your great work

I have mostly solved the issues I was having. The redraw option on the tablet was triggered by the OS and is a common problem with launchers. I uninstalled a few apps that were consuming memory and rebooted and all is fine now. The bionic problems have mostly disappeared however I still receive a “com.motorola.blur.home” has closed when I install a new app.

Hi. I purchased your launcher initially on my evo 3d but decided to use it on my galaxy tab 10.1. It allows me to select the launcher but will not allow me to apply a theme. It will say that its complete but when i hit the homekey it doesnt show the theme. I uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. Any idea whats going on?

      • December 26th, 2011 7:21am

To get the old themes working on your tablet, you have to go back to a version of ADW EX that the themes are compatible with.
Best move if you have a backup copy of 1.3.3.1 on your evo, nuke 1.3.3.5x on the tablet and copy that backup of 1.3.3.1 to the tablet and install it.

    • December 25th, 2011 10:23pm

biggest adw flaw that makes it unusable for me is that most themes don’t have move to SD option and can’t be moved even with move2sd enabler..also I don’t understand why you can’t change app drawer background, screen/app drawer icons can’t be changed separately but only all at once with one theme, no icon gestures, no custom screen transition speed, no app drawer folders and so on..hope one day adw ex will have these features and I will get back

I want the hidden dockbar back! I like the scrollable function of the new dockbar, but I NEED the hidden dockbar. I’d rather have two dockbars, both with scroll. So I can still have a hidden dockbar that I can show with up gesture, and have a fixed dockbar for the main phone functions (phone/sms/contacts/etc).

I tried to recreate by putting icons that I can scroll to, but I can’t set the up gesture to scroll to it. I use the hidden dockbar for alternative apps – for example, I have main camera in dockbar, then I have fx cam on hidden dockbar. So I can just gesture up to switch between them. Now I need to gesture left on the dockbar. It’s much harder to use a left/right gesture at the dockbar than to just gesture up anywhere on the screen.

Another issue, I reboot my Galaxy S a lot to change battery (I use external charger for the convenience of carrying several batteries). Every time I reboot, I have to rename the desktop/in-folder icons. I find that I can make the name stick only if I also change the icon picture. This sucks. I don’t want to customize icons for everything!

Can you give us the option of where the trashcan is please? Specifically to not allow the trashcan to appear? I use many rows and when I move an icon the trashcan appears and makes the screen shrink, but the icon places do not shrink, so it is hard to place the icon in the right space. Please allow for removal of trans can on desktop

I hope the developers read this as I didn’t see an area for bug reports.

Running on a Xoom with 3.2.4 (rooted)

    1. When you setup a Group the selection screen is forced to Portrait. Since I have the Xoom in a keyboard folio it’s awkward to turn it sideways to select the groups.

    2. After you move an item around on the desktop the “Dock as Overlay” setting gets treated as if it’s checked (thus not shrinking the desktop) and I have to do a “ADW Restart” to get the screen to look correct (that is without having the bottom row of icons behind the dock).

    3. When placing items on the desktop the cell in the grid it snaps to is usually lower than where you have your finger.

    4. Would it be possible to add the option to display the item names in the dock bar?

There is only one problem; lock screen…
On the lock screen, Galaxy Nexus’ hidden button would not be showed up, I guess… However, MENU button is showed up. If I touch that menu button, device is just unlocked without touching the locker icon.

I have been enjoyig this launcher for a year or more and have loved it. But this recent update was nothing minor. You have completely gotten rid of the ever scrolling hidden dockbar which was pretty awesome. I’ve noticed I’m not the only one who thinks so. Many others have dropped your launcher completely. I really hope you consider us who have been here supporting you and listen to what we like. I’m sticking for now but this whole new folder thing isn’t a good transition and soon i may find something better. Thanks for everything.

Been using ADW EX for a while now and it’s brilliant.
I recently moved on to a new ROM on my phone called MIUI. This ROM offers a lot of themeing options including icons etcetc. This packs of icons found in MIUI themes tend to be a lot more complete than most ADW themes, but I have noticed when a theme is applied in MIUI it’s icons do not theme within ADW EX. Is it possible to change this or fix it? Would make ADW perfect!

    Thanks

Love the app, but have a problem and a suggestion for dealing with it:

As other people have mentioned, the trash is causing some problems. This is because it intrudes into the home screen, meaning it is harder to access the top row. In fact, when trying to edit an item from the top row, I often end up accidentally removing it instead. This is particularly bad in themes that have a large image for the trash, and can make it almost impossible to edit, or even use the top row at all.

    Anyway, here is my suggestion.

    Upon long-pressing an item:
    - Bring up options menu as before
    - Show two pixels of trash area

    Upon dragging item:
    - Expand trash to full size and shrink homescreen to accommodate it
    or
    - Expand trash to full size upon drag gesture (such as Windows 7-like shake, or circular path)

This lets you both edit in-place and move without the trash intruding.

look – I appreciate all your hard work – really I do – and I have been using this app for as long as it’s been around, BUT – please listen to me:

THE NEW DOCK IMPLEMENTATION IS TERRIBLE.

details? ok – when adding more icons to the dock there is no way to insure which icons will stay displayed by default at the bottom of the screen. I want to always have the same 5 icons displayed in the dock and then I want to be able to scroll across to find something else – case in point: Go Launcher EX.

BUT REALLY – what I want is the OLD FUNCTIONALITY BACK. give me back the hidden dock!! that was one of the things that always distinguished ADW from the other launchers… and now it’s gone and we are all diminished by it.

seriously – I love this launcher – but I cannot use it in it’s current form. I BEG YOU to please listen to your customer’s feedback on this one.

in the meantime – I’m using Go Launcher (which sux, but has predictable behavior).

I’ve used all of the populat Android launchers, and I prefer ADW.

Here’s a bug to please address:

When I edit the name of icons on my Home screen, the names *eventually* revert back to the stock names. ADW does not reliably persist edited icon names.

I am using a Droid Bionic running Android 2.3.4.

January 7, I tried to buy ADW Lauch ex using the market app, something went wrong and I have been charged 6 times for the program. Now I wonder how I can get back money that has been deducted from my account.

  6. Dear Anderweb,

    Can i make a suggestion?
Please use a different scaling method when resizing custom icon images.

i made some custom icons and here is an example:
    http://i.imgur.com/fXuPU.png
    see the difference?

    If that cannot be done..
maybe it’s easier to add an option to use unresized images as icons.

Hope you read this and good luck with your projects!
