ADWLauncher EX 1.3.3.1
Hi everyone!
One or two weeks ago, some devices started to get Android 3.2 update…. and suddenly ADWEX ADWSettings menu stopped working….
As the summer is here and my job granted us some free time in the hot afternoons, I took the opportunity to make sohme other changes in addition to the 3.2 fix. Read next:
Changelog:
- Fix the incompatibility found within ADWSettings against android 3.2 (I still don’t know how, but it fixed while messing the xmls :P)
- In Android 3.x tablets, the top Actionbar now displays a customizable shirtcut to the left instead the ugly app icon. It’s set to “open app drawer” by default, but you can modify it by longpressing it and pressing “Edit” in the popup, like any other icon :)
- In Android 3.x tablets, the top Actionbar displays also a few menu items to the right (in the order set up by you with ADWSettings/General Behavior/System Preferences/Customize menu), because a lot of people wanted to get rid of the “Lock desktop” fixed item there.
- New dockbar (The secondary dockbar, the one you reveal by “swiping up” over the Main Dock) design thanks to @joshuas_79 :
- New option for the dockbar (yes, the secondary one, remember: you can put any number of icons in there, it has scrolling magic) can now be set as “primary“.
- Both docks are now always horizontally placed at the bottom on big screen devices (10″ tablets)
- If you have a folder within the main dock or the dockbar, you can (finally!) drag and drop items inside those folders.
- New “Quick Folder Popup” implementation:
- User folders now display in a horizontally scrollable/paginated icon list (usability/speed improvement IMHO)
- Custom app groups “Launcher Actions” can be set to be show in the same “popup” or in the full app drawer via a new option in the “Edit Shirtcut” screen (see screenshots).
- This popup can be themed (more info below)
- A bunch of other small tweaks and fixes, as usual, but nothing “big”, sorry :(
Theming info:
I’m sharing a few “hints” about how to properly put together some elements of an ADW theme, but hopefully soon, Master @klinster will be able to bring more in depth help to themers out there:
- The new “Quick Folder Popup” can be themed providing three drawables: qa_popup, qa_arrow_up and qa_arrow_down. The original pictures are attached in this post for you to use as reference.
- Make sure you place your drawables in the proper directories, or your theme will look ugly.
- For example, icons:
Icon sizes must respect the android guidelines, this is:
-ldpi=36×36
-mdpi=48×48
-hdpi=72×72Why is this so important? Because if themes do NOT contain icons with the proper resolution/density, they will look distorted/pixelated/etc. And think about this: if you DON’T put HDPI icons within your theme, your tablet customers are going to be mad at you!
Also, putting a 96×96 icon within drawable-mdpi/drawable-hdpi will only cause the icons to be poorly scaled down to comply the standards…. just an advice. - And different screen sizes/orientations:
Take for example the dockbar (the secondary one). It needs just one drawable to theme it: dockbar_bg.
- If the app is running in a phone, in protrait mode, this dockbar appears as an horizontal row of icons at the bottom of the screen.
- If the app is running in a phone, in landscape, this dockbar appears as a vertical column of icons at the right side of the screem.
- If the app is running on a tablet device, this dockbar appears as an horizontal row of icons at the bottom of the screen (in both portrait and landscape mode!)
So, for a proper Dockbar theming you should design at least 3 images!
- res/drawable-port/dockbar_bg.png
- res/drawable-land/dockbar_bg.png
- res/drawable-xlarge/dockbar_bg.png
But also, if you want to provide the better looking pictures for teh user, you should provide density dependant drawables in the proper directories!! So this could be something like…
- res/drawable-port-ldpi/dockbar_bg.png
- res/drawable-land-ldpi/dockbar_bg.png
- res/drawable-port-mdpi/dockbar_bg.png
- res/drawable-land-mdpi/dockbar_bg.png
- res/drawable-port-hdpi/dockbar_bg.png
- res/drawable-land-hdpi/dockbar_bg.png
- res/drawable-xlarge-port-mdpi/dockbar_bg.png
- res/drawable-xlarge-land-mdpi/dockbar_bg.png
- res/drawable-xlarge-port-hdpi/dockbar_bg.png
- res/drawable-xlarge-port-hdpi/dockbar_bg.png
- …….
So…. yes, this can be as complex as you may think of, but it ends in showing the properly sized/better quality images. And remember, NinePatch drawables are best to fit this kind of items in a bigger range of screen resolutions!!!
- For example, icons:
Conclusion:
I know there are a lot of things to do to provide a better user experience and improve the overall quality of the app, so I apologize in advance for any issue you may find (or have found). I’ll try my best to improve things… I always try.
Best regards!

Hate the new folders! Terrible!
How can I get the previous version?
–a paying customer
Will be fixed the backup in the next version?
I really can’t redo 7 desktops every wipe of the phone, it’s a complete lost of time. I’m sticking with 1 desktop, not nice at all.
Please fix it!
hi,
I have an archos 101 tablet which I always use in landscape mode but the dockbar itself won’t go into landscape, it remains on the right side of the screen…
any tips?
Thx!
I can not save and restore configulation and setting. Please advice me.
Another vote to bring back the old style folders … either as the default, or a configuration option. The new folders are next to useless when you can only see four items at a time and have to scroll around to find anything. Thanks for the update, particularly 3.2 support … but I want my folders back !
Is there any future plans on GPU acceleration (Tegra / Adreno)? It’s a shame to keep our GPUs in idle all the time when they provide the possibility to offload the CPU by much…
It could be a feature of EX and as far as I’ve seen, except from the default/stock launcher no other launcher replacement is GPU accelerated.
Sorry for my English :)
Just curious if there is any option to remove or hide. what you refer to as the “action bar”
general behavior > system preferences > menu entries
Seems to be a bug with the wallpaper. After cropping it’s zoomed in farther than what was cropped.
i tried the free version it worked pretty well on my droid r2d2. so i bought the ADW launcher ex. never worked right..force closes.. uninstalled it in disgust. wrote the Dev an email asking for a refund cause 2 something isn’t gonna break anyone, and i have heard nothing for 2 weeks or better. i do actually expect that when i pay for a service or item that it work completely and totally, if it does not, then a refund is in order.
needless to say, i’ll never buy ano9ther one of this dev’s apps ever. you’d expect some honor…some truth…nope..what ya get is theivry.
Hi, I had purchased de ADW four or five months ago, and the nly problem I noticed, is the lag that happens when I put transparency in the background of the app list.
I hope you improve the performance of the launcher, this will be the best launcher in the market.
Another vote for the old folder view. I’ve had no usability problems with ADW.EX until this change. Please add an option to give a choice of folder implementation.
Hi, I have the free version of ADW Launcher and then purchased the EX version but the dowload doesn’t appear on my phone. I’ve tried resending the download several times from the Android Market but nothin happens. Do I need to uninstall the free version first, could that be causing the issue? Thanks!
Hi,
Another vote for the option of the old folder view back please.Having to scroll to see all of the contents of a folder means I may as well open the main app list to find what I need.
Also I don’t seen to be able to drag and drop within any folder, dockbar our not!
Xperia Play 2.3.3 (rooted)
P.S The email address you have provided on the market to contact the developer bounces back as unknown or incorrect.
Dont mathers what i do, the up bar is always black?
Cant be changed?
Can someone tell me how to set the number of Desktop screens?
I changed it to two a week or so ago and cannot find my way to that setting again.
Thanks
Dear AnderWeb…
when you make update for this app, can u please make the folder to show whats inside, just like “folder organizer – fabio Collini” app does..coz i think its so cool to have those kind of optioninside this wonderfull apps…i really” hope my idea could be implemented..
Sincerely,
Tommy
I had adw ex. Had to factory reset my phone. Love the launcher. Can you send resend me the launcher
I have enjoyed using the Free version very much. Ponied up and paid for the EX version to continue support for this fine organizer. Was a bit disappointed my previous configuration with the Free version didn’t migrate right on over to the EX version. Sort of expected the Launcher to detect it’s predecessor was installed, and replace it, but start with those settings (if that’s possible).
I find the EX version very feature rich. It will be fun to explore and tweak. I find it’s a tad easy to drop icons on a neighboring desktop window. In addition finding the ADW EX settings involves a little too much effort.
Would be nice if there was a primer / manual available on the site, perhaps a pdf for download.
i LOVE the launcher, more so than any other. I keep reverting to adw.
My suggestion? or maybe this can be done and i dont know how….I changed some icons using various icon pakcs, i change my wallpaper, and have a great black and white and green theme. I can back up my settings, but how can i back up my theme? so i can make another with black and yellow for example, but revert back to this one. Id like to create like 5 various ptions, which would have different dockbar icons and so forth, and save it.
I never enjoy tweaking my custom theme fearing that i will want to revert back, despite putting in effort to change all icons manually etc…
It would be a great option, like your presets, to do a total backup and have them 1, theme 2, theme 3 etc,…
any reply would be appreciated!
Thank you
Hi. I’m running ADW Launcher and it was working perfectly until I updated my HTC Evo 4G last night. Now there’s a new bug: long-pressing an icon has no effect. I cannot move, delete, or edit icons, because long-press has no effect. Neither can I long-press an icon from the app drawer in order to add it to desktop. I tried switching themes. That didn’t help. I switched over to both an HTC and a Go launcher, and the problem did not exist there. This only happens in ADW. Will have to stick with Go Launcher until this is fixed.
Thanks for a great product though. I love it!
Clarification: I’m running ADW Launcher EX, not the free version.
I was wondering if there was any chance of you authorizing Iceland to download your launcher from the market?
You guys offer an excellent product with the ADW launcher. It works great and continues to improve. I have a request for an enhancement and/or clarification. According to what I understand about this App, which is very little mind you, this is obviously a home replacement app, simple enough. However my question is this, does it end the android home application when it’s running? I would imagine that you would need super user access to do that? If you do indeed need su access then I would imagine that the android process is still running in the background with all of my widgets and apps on it? Would that not be something that limits my phone resources?
Given that the previous questions about the functionality of ADW launcher are true, would it be possible to create a simple button that would allow us to temporarily view the stock home application so we can remove and disable any active widgets without removing ADW launcher?
Thanks for your help in this matter,
Eric
That’s handled by Android. It supports home launcher replacements natively, and when you choose a new defaults, that’s what it runs, not the old one. The first time you launch a new one, the old one may run for a bit, but it will be closed as soon as Android needs the memory. Home launchers in general are amongst the first thing closed by Android unless you root your device and tweak the OOM priorities, so there’s nothing to worry about there.
Great app! I can’t find a place to send but reports and figured you’d rather not see it in the market reviews so here it is: open a group (not as popup) then rotate the device. When the screen rotates, the group selection filter vanishes and ALL apps are displayed. Captivate running CM7, LauncherEx 1.3.3.1
Sorry guys for writing spanish…I dont know so much english and I couldnt explain it on english…:p
After I loaded adw i accidently put my home screen on “always use this app” over adw launcher. How can I reverse this setting on thr kyocera echo
Go to the Manage Applications in your phone settings, find your native home launcher and clear defaults.
Hi
how can i add more application icon list?
where is the location of application list.xml?
for example i want to define a new icon for specific program, how i can?
Another, very urgent vote for the old folder popup style. The new, paginated one is IMO definitely a large step backwards in terms of usability. In fact it’s a deal breaker for me. For now I’ve reinstalled the older version of ADW Launcher EX and will continue to use it – until that folder issus is fixed.
Otherwise ADW Launcher EX ist just perfect for my needs. I would sure hate to have to let it go!
Anderweb,
Love the app! I am an EX user and tell everyone I know with a DROID to get this app.
Been running perfectly until my Motorola DROID X did a system update 3 days ago. Now, every time the main app screen refreshes – either from a black screen or from a swipe of a previous screen – every icon and widget are all visibly refreshed. Maybe its a sluggishness issue? But I never had this problem on the previous DROID X build. For your info I am now at Android Version 2.3.3, System Version 4.5.602.MB810.Verizon.en.US. If you need any other info I can provide.
Chris
which is the theme that you have in your screenshots when i purchased adw launcher ex? Ihave looked everwhere but cant seem to find it.
just bought ADW Ex, love it!
but…
+1 on having “old style” folders
requests:
#1 when clicking the ‘+’ in an empty space in the dock, how about popping up the same long-press selection menu that we get on the desktop rather than a message saying “this space is empty, drag something here”
#2 I LOVE being able to have a ‘launcher shortcut’ to an individual set of apps based on catalog/groups, but this would be even better if we could get:
a) a ‘launcher action’ that I could create a shortcut for that would pop up the list of groups (similar to the ‘choose group’ menu option when I’m already in in the app drawer)
b) an efficient interface for assigning applications to different catalogs (perhaps a new screen in the settings, or an alternate behavior for long-pressing on an app in the drawer)
Hi. I installed ADW Launcher onto my Viewsonic G Tablet, and now I can’t get it to start up. I keep getting a constant loop that says:
Sorry!
The application ADW.Launcher (process android.process.acore) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
Force close
Unfortunately, Force close does nothing, except give the same error message. Over and over and over again.
What do I do to get my tablet working again? I have tried to contact someone there, but keep getting emails bounced back to me. Please HELP!
Thanks,
Alexis
p.s. I am not a programmer, or a technically minded person…at all, so please send easy to understand, detailed instructions…Please.
I love ADW on my Asus Transformer.
But every time I hide the top actionbar. It reappears after I change screen orientation.
Please fix.
Thnx!
Whith this new update on the xoom the dock being shown in this tackey looking broken up block format when the xoom is held the long way, PLEASE FIX! other than that love the app.
Just purchased EX tonight after having used the free ADW for a good time and being very satisfied with it. I have to say, I’m severely disappointed in this purchase.
The whole concept of a folder is to provide an organizational sub screen. The whole idea of the the 4 icon only, swiping container may be great for a tablet, but its terrible on a smartphone. I really would like my old folder UI back please, as I see no earthly way this is actually any help for organization or time saving.
Second again on a smartphone, and I don’t know if this is true on a tablet, the whole smaller second line of text generated in a smaller size, and overlapped by the first line is really ugly.
On the plus side, the themeing screen and the added animations and decorations are very nice. I especially like the 4d app drawer. I’m really going to have to give this a low rating until the UI is fixed out, or the options are provided to fix it.
Latest update – bug where custom text labels get lost after a reboot still not fixed. As posted before this a real PITA. I really like ADW EX. Is it really that hard to fix this annoying bug? Thanks.
I would love to know if I can change the background color of a particular icon in the likeiphone style.
Thanks,
A
Oldstyle folder! please,, Purchased EX after having used the free ADW for a while,, pointless buy, used the free ADW for the themes with nice folders, quick and visually fast to find things! with lots of icons in a folder, sorta “PC desktop folder” feeling,, disappointed when the paid version is a “lesser” product,,(4 me and obviously others),, so, at least a option to choose! ,,
I just restore to the last version of Adw Ex, i never update it until have the update to return the old folder style or give an option.
I’ve just installed the latest version on my Asus transformer, and can’t get it to load as default action for the home button.
Going to the ADW settings > Gestures > home button binding
doesn’t allow my to make any noticable change, the home button keeps defaulting to the stock Asus tranformer launcher.
It’s possible to insert in the future release the possibility of create folder in the app drawer ? it will be the best android launcher !!
I confirm, same problem here. What I have to do is a restore desktop config after each reboot to “repair” my icon labels.
It’s be nice to fix this ;-)
Thanx !
Hi,
this is an awesome application and i can’t imagine to work without it (bought the Ex as well) But i have one little issue… is there a way to make the system persistent option work again? I Kind of dislike it when i have to wait for the launcher to refresh. Please let me know if it is possible and if you are going to implement it. Thanks,
Mike
Hello, ADW launcher is a great App!
This is a bug report!
ADW launcher CRASH when try to enter the ADW setting.
The phone is Meizu M9.
Please fix that!
Thanks!
Might sound like a stupid and obvious question, however it has to be asked, Have you accidently locked the home screens with the lock option in the home screen menu?
I purchased the ADW Launcher EX for my Xoom Tablet yesterday and it will not download. I was really excited about getting the app after seeing what it could do on it’s YouTube video. I contacted Google thinking it was a Market issue, but they stated that it had to be an app issue as the app was being sent to my tablet but was not completing the download. What can you do to help? I would still love to get the app, but I would be foolish to give away money for a product that I never received.
Please add an option to use the old style full screen folders instead of the new small horizontal style. This was important to me when I purchased ADW, and the new style is more difficult to use as you can only see four icons at a time. I much preferred being able to quickly scan all the icons on the screen at once. Thank you.
Hi,
i’d like to report a Problem.
Sometimes the osx like dock bar disappears and a the nexus like phone dock is shown.
Restart of adw doesnt help…
Workaround to get it back: Reset ADW Settings then restore your adw settings with a backup you made fortunately earlier ;) but loose the widgets :(
Steps to Reproduce: no – really random
Discoverability: HIGH (and annoying)
1.3.3.1 ADW Laucher EX on Motorola XOOM 3G Ger. Android 3.1
Can you maybe shed light on why there is no ADW.Launcher app in the app drawer? I am using Motorola Atrix with Android 2.3
Hi, ex looks realy good , bought it, installed on my 3.2 stock xoom , it works BUT …. not properly ,the “HOME” button only dims the screen , is 1.3.3 fully honeycomb 3.2 compatible ?
