Apologizes and update. ADW’s back

And once again, I add more bugs than I fix! :P (v1.3.2 out)

Sorry for the last update, there were 2 major bugs in there:

  • Scrolling between desktops suddenly stopped in between screens when the desktop scrolling speed was set up very high.
  • If you added a folder to the dock or dockbar, you got a nice FC loop :(

So i’ve “kind of” fixed them and released v1.3.2… hopefully this one lasts a bit longer. On a side note, I think I’ve fixed a bug regarding some devices (like the dell streak one) where the “portrait orientation” was not being properly applied…. but as I don’t own such device the “fix” is unconfirmed.

My apologizes again!

Previous post (v1.3.1):

Rebember, with great power comes great responsibility, and with ADW updates, come .1′s :).

I’ve made a few fixes on ADWLauncher EX v1.3.1 for some minor annoyances and reported bugs, nothing big.

There’s a new option (ADWSettings/UI Settings/Icons) called “Density Hack“. This is enabled by default on large and xlarge MDPI devices to load HDPI icons instead of the MDPI ones. This is what google did on Honeycomb’s launcher… and although I don’t like the way they did it, is quite “cool” or whatever and otherwise some honeycomb  users would get very tiny icons on their “awesome” tablets…
Anyways, some other users may like smaller “real state” icons so I’ve added it as an option (options? inside ADW? what?) ;)

I’ve also been noticed about some of the transition effects causing strange graphic glitches in some devices (mostly the cube inverse, but may be other ones too). I’m working on it, but isn’t fixed yet on this release.

Old post:

Hi everyone.

First of all I want to apologize for the lack of updates…I’d like to give you all a clear explanation about it:

As some of you may know, I started the ADW project long ago as a learning/having fun thing. I was unemployed and wanted to learn things to do with my phone. I spent between 5/8 hours a day on it during the first year, releasing weekly updates (sometimes even daily). You all made the project grow up with constant requests, suggestions, ideas, etc, and the most important thing: you made me get a new full time job dedicated to android on a cool spanish company called Iphonedroid.

The bad news? After a full year unemployed, getting back to work changed everything, and it’s taken longer than expected setting up a “daily development schedule” for my personal projects. Well, I’m trying to find a good way of going on devvin’ (:P) ADW in my very limited free time and without getting my family mad at it. This is how i’ve managed to push today’s update.

I can’t promise weekly updates, but I really want to do more regular stuff. One of my top priorities is putting something back into “ADW2″ project (which its been succesfully worked on by Florian Sundermann with very cool additions) porting some of the EX goodies into it and the opensource world.

Also, I DO read EVERY email I get, sometimes the answer is fast, sometimes I need to find some time to sit down and reply… But feel free to go on sending suggestions, requests, bug reports, etc!

Ok, enough boring stuff for today, now the good news:

ADWLauncher EX v1.3.0

  • Completely redone the app drawers code from scratch to improve memory usage and scrolling performance, even with transparencies, live wallpapers, etc
  • Scroll snapping on the vertical drawer/4d drawer “a la launcher 2″. (option enabled by default)
  • True” home screen looping (enabled by default) ported from ADW2.
  • New theme management screen with added functionality (and more will come)
    • Dock and dockbar background customization moved into the new theme management screen.
    • Users now can select a different theme for icons/dock/dockbar/all the rest.
  • Removed the persistence option due to being removed from android 2.3 (and it was really hacky btw).
  • New transitions from popular demand: cube, cube inverse and wheel.
  • New “desktop zoom” option when opening the app drawers (enabled by default)
  • Drawer swiping in the opposite direction of the scroll to change app groups (disabled by default, and I’ll add more visual feedback on next update).
  • Experimental Honeycomb compatibility with enabled hardware acceleration.
  • Better large and xlarge screens compatibility (wether on android 1.6, 2.x or 3.0)
  • New quickactions implementation for desktop long pressing items with new actions. (ported from ADW2)
  • New implementation for the counter bubbles with improved appearance.
  • New error reporting system to send (if you want to) direct crash feedback and spam to me :)
  • Lots of minor fixes here and there from user reports.
  • Other things I might have forgotten :P

I know is not a “big biggie”, but… hey… we’re back!

For themers out there:

If you’ve made themes for ADW.Launcher and/or ADWLauncher EX, you should add this lines to your res/values/theme_config.xml :)

<!-- remove this line if you don't want it to show -->
<string name="authorName">Your real name/nickname</string>
<!-- remove this line if you don't want the market link -->
<string name="developerName">Your android market developer name</string>
<!-- remove this line if you don't have one -->
<string name="authorLink">http://your.web.site</string>

Also, you can now include in your themes a proper activity and “call to ADW” to apply the theme. I’ve included an intent for this:

Intent i=new Intent("org.adw.launcher.SET_THEME");
startActivity(Intent.createChooser(i,"Apply theme to..."));

This will be compatible with ADW, ADWEX and any other fork after I push the changes to git, but currently will only work on this version of ADWEX.

Next release:

Next week I’ll be pushing another release with all the community translations for ADWEX, so if your language is not there, feel free to join and submit! :-)

Also my TO-DO list for ADW is BIG, so expect always some new option, bug, etc ;-)

been using ADW EX since the beginning, I love it. recently upgraded to the HTC Thunderbolt from the Droid Eris. I rooted and flashed Das BAMF rom almost immediately. Adw ex always force closes when trying to change homescreen icons to one from an ADWTheme Pack. also for some reason, when pressing menu > Wallpaper nothing happens.

Android 3.1 on my xoom killed adwex 1.3.2. Seems to force crash, them menu button is missing after it crashes once and you can’t resize Widgets. I love this launcher, hope there is a fix soon. :D

I have used ADW for quite some time now and the only issue I have experienced is that the main dock goes missing from time to time. In order to “find” it again I have to go into settings and set either of the gesture commands to hide/show the main dock. Since I normally do not want to hide the main dock I then turn off the command (until the next time the dock goes missing).
Yesterday I got annoyed since the dock kept disappearing on my new phone (a Galaxy S II), so I set out to find out why. It turns out that all it takes is to swipe swiftly upwards over any of the five icons on the dock to hide it. I guess that this might be a function, not a bug. If it is, I really want to know how to disable it. So does my wife and a number of people who have written negative things about disappearing main docks on the Market.
I have experienced the behavior on a Galaxy S, a Galaxy S II, a Desire and a ZTE Blade, which are all the phones I have installed ADW on.

      Hi Kjell,

I have exactly the same problem as you have. Would there be a way to easely show the main dock again?

I don’t know if it’s the custom ROM I’m running (CyanogenMod 7 for the Motorola Cliq) or ADW Launcher EX, but if I open a folder in landscape, and then rotate my phone to portrait, the folder is closed — and won’t open ever again (until I kill ADW Launcher Ex). FWIW, I have my folders set to close on launching a shortcut.

I did some more searching online and found a lot of forum threads about people losing their main dock and switching to Launcher Pro because of the “bug”. Here is one:
It turns out that the bug is a feature… Apparently you can switch between the main dock and the hidden dock by swiping over the dock area. This is not obvious to anyone with 0 icons in their hidden dock, especially since the timing of the swipe needs to be very precise.

Does any one get ADW Notifier working with ADW launcher EX?

I can seem to get the nice notification bubbles on my hoemscreen

or on my widget locker screen

Any one who can help me with that?

I, and a lot of others, do not have 2.3, so without persistent, we are getting constant force closes!!! Had to go back to DX Top until this is fixed. I paid for this a year ago, and now it is unusable.
I know you have a job now, but for this many people to post about it and you to release another update that does not address this is is insane to me. Also it Makes me think these forums don’t get read at all. Sorry for ranting, but I love ADW and it kills me to have to move on. Please help!!

Please option to hide icons. I install several adw themes, all icons are on appdrawer and they are useless icons. I cant hide them.
Hiding icons is not diffucult to develop, all other launchers have this but i wanna use your launcher, i like it very much.
Please give us option to hide icons.

With app drawer open, click menu > choose group > “new catalog”. Name it. You will now have a blank app drawer. Click menu > setup group > select the icons you want shown.

Thank you. But still I wish he adds a hiding unnecessary icons management which is simpler than using catalogs in my opinion. And they are different things. I dont think this will take too much time to develop.

    • fett
    • May 17th, 2011 9:46pm

Yeah, hiding the drawer icons would be preferable. But the catalogs is an interesting feature.

ADW Launcher is the best I’ve used, but I have two suggestions that would make it even better:

    1. Please give us an option to lock the “Open App Drawer” icon onto the dock. Currently, it is too easy to delete or replace this button if the homescreen is unlocked.

    2. Allow us to CHOOSE whether or not we want the swipe down to hide the dock. Way too many times, the dock disappears by an accidental swipe, and is difficult to get back.

    Thank You.

While improved, there is still a noticeable lag when opening or closing the app drawer. It would appear the animation is not running at its best fps. Related, when the desktop zoom is toggled off, the app drawer animation becomes unusable. Please address.

    • adam
    • May 27th, 2011 6:40pm

I have noticed that other app drawer animations enlarge and shrink items when coming or going. Ads ex is the only launcher that does not do this. Howcome?

I am your Adw Ex fan. Thanks for the great work.
I would like to ask for a favour: please change the folder popup window’s appearance to something else more better looking. Everything looks great until i tap on the folder.
    Thanks again!

I’m having a problem with ADW changing a desktop icon back to its original name after I’d renamed it to something shorter.

For example, I renamed “Dolphin Browser HD” to just “Dolphin” when I added it to one of my desktop pages. Whenever I reboot, it ends up back to the original “Dolphin Browser HD”. For some reason, this _seems_ to affect just recently added icons. Older ones retain the renaming I gave them — for instance, from “RepliGo Reader” to “RepliGo”.

Did something change in a recent update?

they change in other launchers, but not in adw anymore.

The hide status bar keeps getting activated even though I have it unchecked. I can’t figure out what causes it to disappear, but I have to go in and check and uncheck it to get the status bar to come back

I had installed the ADW launcher EX on yesterday and I love all of new features with v1.3.3.
But I have some questions need you help to rpely:
    1. Could I sort the APP of folder by myself? Its seem sort APP by draw to folder’s chronological order.
    2. If I can’t sort the APP of folder by myself, how can I setting the sort order of folder?

  1. ADW launcher Ex V1.3.3 is cool and fast. Unfortunately there are sporadically restarts of the launcher (e.g. after syncing via WLAN) which takes much time before my smartphone is usable again.
    Is this bug already known?
Will there be a bugfix for that in the near future?

    • PS: Obviously the restarts have something to do with the memory usage of ADW launcher Ex. The launcher needs very much memory in comparision to other launchers. On my Dell Streak there is with ADW launcher and only a few apps runnning only 164MB RAM left where as with Go launcher Pro e.g. there is over about 220MB left with the same apps running.

A feature I miss on ADWLauncher is a title on the application drawer showing the current app group name (in case there is more than one group) so you know where you are when you open the drawer. Now the name is only shown as a toast on the moment you change from a group to another one, but if you close the drawer and open it again you don’t know what group are you on until you change group again.

I’m getting an android tablet in like 2 months and I’ve looked for 20 hours at apps and yours is the app that I feel is a must have from the beginning. This may be a long post starting with questions, I don’t know why but I’ve read everything here(and store). I don’t mind if you delete my post or chop it or use it but I feel weird because no one says the things I do.
    First off with questions :
1.A) Is it true I can open up to 7 different desktops and that is the max? 1.A) When i open a desktop it sounds like i can lock tampering? 1.B) Can I then unlock a single drawer? 1.C) I don’t know how many drawers I can have can you tell me? 1.D) STORY I would like hand my kids a desktop lock it and unlock the type of app I will let them have for the time they use it for without worrying about tampering.
Second 2.A) Can you use Living Wallpapers in this app? 2.B) It sounds like you can but I am not sure if it will work with this specific app that takes videos and makes them into living wallpapers?
Third 3.A) Is there actual independant passwording for each folder? Drawer and/or Desktop? 3.B.) OPINION BEING What would hide be used for? And how is hidden kept from other users?
Fourth 4.A) Is there any way your app can handle making apps data like games data specific for the desktop you are using? I know this one is a stretch but I think people would like to know.

This was not an exhuastive question post but I have read and watched for hours now and I find your program absoultly Essential and Maybe addressing these things would be good for you please do (write me).

Where is the best place to post feature suggestions? I will try here for now.

Anyway, I have ADWLauncher EX on my Asus Transformer with HC 3.1 on it. All in all, it works great and performs better than the stock launcher. Once thing I would like to see is an option to have a button that goes to the app drawer integrated into the ADW bar at the top of the screen. Right now I can get to search, ADW Settings, etc from that menu button and that is about it.

Cosmetically, I have chosen to NOT have the dock bar on my tablet, so I am hoping that an option can be added/included to simulate the apps button that is built-in to the upper-right of the Honeycomb interface. I can’t be the only one that would appreciate this option in the settings.

To summarize, I would like a button in the ADW bar at the top that goes directly to my app drawer as well. Not a menu option, but a button built in to the top bar – similar to the default HC interface.

Also, what is the ADW button/icon for in the upper-left? It doesn’t seem to do anything for me. Maybe that could be the app drawer button?

Adw notifier has some problem. If I receive sms and open messaging but haven’t read the sms yet, the notification bubble is cleared!(back button is pressed).
Default stock launcher does not clear if sms is not read yet even open the messaging.
