ADWLauncher EX. “A new hope”

Update!

ADWLauncher EX is now available through AndroidPIT market for everyone who prefer buying through paypal, have problems with their credit cards not allowing Euro payments or just don’t have Google’s support on their countries!

Hi everyone and Merry Christmas!!!!

I’m proud to announce a new toy for all of you, desktop tweaking addicts. Here’s what I’ve named “ADWLauncher EX“.

Differences between ADW.Launcher and ADWLauncher EX

ADWLauncher EX is based on the ADW.Launcher opensource code with a lot of new additions and improvements, like for example:

  • 5 different app drawer styles/behaviors
    • 3D Nexus One like applications drawer
    • 2 different plain vertical applications drawers styles, the “old one” and a new fast and smooth one
    • 2 different Iphone-like horizontal applications drawers, a traditional paginated one and a new one with continuous fling
  • Different desktop transitions (8 at the moment): new animations while navigating through your desktop screens. Try them all, they’re crazy!!!
  • New Icons configurations/look and feel: Tweak your desktop icons, change its sizes, add coloured backgrounds, change font size, color, etc!
  • New fast presets mode: Quickly change the whole desktop configuration by 1 click!
  • Editable desktop icons for applications, shortcuts and folders!
  • Lots of code improvements
  • More, more more to come!!

Q&A’s

¿Is this opensource too, like ADW.Launcher?

No

Er….. what??? Are you serious?

Yep

Hm….. So we won’t be seeing ADWLauncher EX source code being released anytime soon, right?

I haven’t said that :-)

When?

When I think it’s time to do it. I’m really tired of some parts of the “android developer community” using my code to develop cool apps (it’s an honour but) never contributing to my (or other) opensource projects, or even put a single mention out there about their code “origins”….

So the amount of ADWLauncher EX code being opensourced and the time rquired to do it will depend on a lot of factors from now on.

Are you discontinuing the free ADW.Launcher?

At all. And I’m always trying to have both projects “in sync” so all new ADW.Launcher features will be added to ADWLauncher EX, and *some* ADWLauncher EX features will become part of ADW.Launcher too.

And remember, ADW.Launcher is an opensource project, anyone could fork it and go on developing it (as a lot other developers have done but without releasing sources)….

Also remember that I’m not the only guy developing ADW.Launcher. @boombuler is coding and helping a lot.

Great launcher, not I am going to have to decide between Launcher Pro and ADW Launcher EX.

I was wondering if anyone knew what the calendar app/widget is being used in the screen shot transitioning between two screens?

Thanks and loving everything so far.

I was already using adw + notifier, buying this was a no brainer :P

My only “gripe” would be that im either dumb and fail to see how to move icones from one home to another (samsung galaxy i9000 JPY stock rom), or its not working like it used to in adw or all the other launchers.

    sugestions:

    1) the “reorder” home screen pages screens would be way more awesome if it was like MIUI launcher or GOlauncher. (same functionality, way better way of getting things done :P)

    2) I don’t use the hidden dock that much, the dock from launcher pro was more to my liking, but then again, this is just my taste, and not a sugestion really :P

I bought ADW.Launcher EX .. excellent bit of work .. only thing is that now my gmail app no longer checks for mail and I am unable to get the notification system built into EX to work either. Assuming its me being stupid rather than this excellent software.. suggestions anyone ?

Excellent work. Used free ADWLauncher and bought ADWLauncher Ex.
I only got one issue since free 1.3.6 an ex 1.0:
    Error backing up settings
A zero bit file is created but nothing more.
    Any help?

Looks interesting. I’d like to try it. But NOT with Google’s idiotic 15 minute return policy. And there seem to be enough differences between this and ADW Launcher that I can’t use that as a trial.

If you offer a trial version that expires after a week, or even a few days, I’ll try it, and if I like it willingly pay for it. But I’m not taking a flyer on something that can’t possibly be evaluated in 15 minutes.

Blame Google for your lost sales.

It can only support 48*48 png on my MDPI device ,and when the icon is adjusted bigger, it becomes dim.
I think ADW EX is perfect except what I said .

    Hi,

I’ve been using LP+ for a while but bought this right away after seeing the demo. Is there documentation? Couldn’t find any so excuse the newb question. You say you can save and switch formats quickly, but I didn’t see how to do that.

Is there a way to choose the background color for the icons if you use that option?

Same comments about the dock background and multi-dock and Notifier issue that others who have used LP+ have mentioned.

As far as paying for an app, I don’t have a problem. I program as well and appreciate your work and innovation. Your pricing is more than fair for the scope of the product.

    Thanks,

    Rob K.

Beautiful! Just one problem. How do I add the default sense weather widget? You know the big bright one that came with the evo.

      • AdamW
      • December 29th, 2010 7:40am

You can’t use Sense widgets with alternate launchers. That’s why they’re “alternate”–they’re not Sense (or Rosie, to be more precise, which is the launcher/homescreen app that Sense uses). Try Beautiful Widgets. Very much like the Sense clock/weather widget.

I would love to see a trial of this app. Google’s new 15 minute refund policy makes it impossible to evaluate an app as complex as this. I have spent close to $100 for apps for the two android phones in our house.

Superb step up from the standard ADW, is there anywhere to request features? Is it possible for the menu buttons to be moved to the bottom in landscape mode rather than on the right hand side? other than that I love it. :D

I can’t find the option to hide the App labels in the drawer settings, am I just missing something?

      • December 28th, 2010 12:27am

Spoke with the developer and he is aware of the hide label option. He requested patience, it will return. Anyway, if you liked ADW before, you will find the $3.43 is well worth the investment. :-)

Josh :For some reason, custom icons are not sticking in the dock bar when the screen is rotated.

+1, during the rotation you can even see the original icons for a short moment.
I’ve switched off rotation in order to provent the icons from switching back to a previous set.

Will my original ADW still be on my phone after loading EX? Will my current setup be on the EX? Sure would appreciate input.

      • December 28th, 2010 10:34pm

I’m trying to figure that one out now.. After installing EX my icons and layout were gone.. however on rebooting (Droid X) whenever I hit the Home button, I had a choice to complete the action using ADW Launcher or ADW Launcher EX. If I pick the old version, I see everything as I had set it up in the original Launcher. If I pick EX however, it has a bare bones setup that only has four or five icons (market, e-mail etc). I’ve tried backing up the settings and config from the old ADW and restoring them using ADW EX – no luck.. it says it can’t find the backups. We need to have some kind of migration plan here!!! This is why people balk at paying money for apps!!
      Are you listening developer?

        • David Hall
        • December 29th, 2010 10:38am

I completely agree. A “migrate” option from ADWLauncher is essential. The reason I refunded yesterday was because I couldn’t find a way to do this, and I had no intention of spending all that time configuring ADWLauncher Plus to be how I’ve so painstakingly got ADWLauncher configured to my liking over the last few months!

Although actually I’m feeling a bit guilty about the refund as I love ADWLauncher and think it’s the right way to go to show my appreciation. I might just buy it but not use it until the import functionality is ready.

When you increase the icon size on the home screens, the icons are very low-res, even though the images are properly sized.

  1. Can you add a way to import settings from regular ADW?

I’d love to see a way to use live folders using categories from the app drawer so that as we add apps to that category they’ll be populated into the folders on the desktop.

    • BuglessFan
    • December 27th, 2010 7:31pm

Any chance of an easy import of ADW desktop config or settings to ADW EX? If there’s no way to just use the .xml files, I guess I’ll just manually do it, but :(

When I pick up a widget and put it down to remove it, I will occasionally receive 2 dialog/pop-ups. If I press the first one to remove and then press the second one, ADW FC’s.

I wish, I really wish I could buy this app. Here in Venezuela we don’t have paid apps in the Android Market, and I tried to buy it via AndroidPit using paypal, but the minimum transaction is 5 $, and I only have 3.6$.

I also tried to donate in the link up there in this same page, but you only accept donations in Euros, which I don’t have.

Is there any other way I can buy it? I can use my credit card to pay in $. Maybe an amazon gift card? something! I wanna purchase this, someway or other! I don’t wanna pirate it anymore, I’ve been toying with the app this last hour and I absolutely love it.

Please, Anderweb, help me help you, this is an awesome piece of coding, and I wanna have it the legal way and at the same time help you and show my appreciation for your hard work.

What do you say? Here’s my e-mail I left in the comment form, if you wanna contact me. Please.

arkazain :When you increase the icon size on the home screens, the icons are very low-res, even though the images are properly sized.

I care out this like you ,I want to make my screen like iphone, if the icon can keep its resolution when enlarged , that would be perfect,or this function of changing size would make no sense.

      • December 28th, 2010 7:33pm

You can try an app called Desktop Visualizer (free app), it basically takes any image from your gallery and makes it into a shortcut on the homescreen. It takes a little bit of work, but it’s worth it IMO. Try it ;)

First of all thanks for this awesome launcher. Love the new myriad of homescreen transitions compared to the boring same transition on all other launcher.

The only downside I see when using ADW Launcher Ex is the animation which runs when you open an app from any of the homescreens is insanely slow (the fading in + Zoom Out effect you get when you goto ADW preferences for ex:). This is not a limitation, but the developer has knowingly set the transition time way too long for that. Some may disagree with me, but I like to have transitions which compliment my phone and try to make it look snappier.

So the only change I ask the developer is, please do add this to the settings as well, and let the users decide which transition to use (for I’d like to have the Android default transition) and what length of time it should run on.

Good Luck! and Thank You! for a project well done.!

Why does ADWLauncher EX change the browser ident string to LS670 when going to sites such as touch.facebook.com? It confuses these sites and some don’t load the correct content because of it. Facebook wants me to ” Download Facebook for your LS670″ .. which isn’t right. it’s superseding the phone announcing it’s a DroidX.

To migrate your settings here’s what worked for me:
    1) In the free version, backup your settings (2 files).
    2) Using Astro or your favorite file browser make copies of the files you just backed up. Change the filenames so they look like this:
    Adw_ex_launcher
    Adw_ex_settings
    3) In ADW EX use restore and it should now see the files. Not sure if this is recommended but it worked great for me. I had to reload all of my widgets but everything else transferred over.

People “steal” code? Just release ADW Launcher EX under GPLv3 or LGPLv3 instead of Apache License.

Awesome. Purchased right away, but PLEASE PLEEEEASE swap the locations of “Phone Settings” & “Lock Desktop”. I shouldn’t have to enter ADW settings to get to the stock phone settings…

  3. since switching to ADW EX, everything is smooth and fast except for launching the app drawer. to be more specific, if I launch the app drawer it takes a few seconds to launch, but if i quickly close it (using the home button or launching an app) and then reopen the app drawer again, it relaunches fast. However after putting my phone to sleep, or avoiding the app drawer for some time, and then waking the phone, I get the slow launch again. It is almost as if opening the app drawer is only fast when the drawer is cached. I dont have this issue with any other launchers and I have tested launcher pro, native launcher, zeam launcher and ADW original.

I am running CM 6.1.1 on an N1 using wildmonks 1267mhz kernel and darktremor’s A2SD with dalvic cache moved to sd as well. I am using kingston’s class 10 microSD card. Linpak of 41, quadrant score of 1724

  4. I’ll surely buy this one! And I hope you will open-source it as soon as possible! I just love free software, but I know what you are talking – people who just enjoys it and contributes nothing back..sad =/ – Anyway, great work man! Keep going with the good stuff! If I have some spare-time in the future, I hope I can contribute code with ADW!

    Surprised this wasnt mentioned…

There is a problem/bug with icon highlights, there is no way to set it to clear. When you turn the alpha slider all the way down the icon background comes out a different color (and not clear)

Also when resizing icons and making them smaller the icon highlight box remains huge.

Please fix. also wouldn’t mind seeing an option to turn off icon highlights alltogether.

    Thanks.

    Question:
Where can I set the number of homescreens? o_O

Problem with catalogs – after setting up one it switches to a random one, i have to scroll back to the one i was setting up.

Please please make the bottom dock working more like LP does – scrolling left and right. Sometimes when my screen is completely occupied with widgets it’s not possible to swipe up to open/close the dock – very inconvenient!
