Chuck Norriz mode for ADWNotifier

Hi all, first a little warning about recent FC messages on ADWNotifier v0.5:

There’s a know bug on Android making updated apps with new permission requests to fail.

So when I released ADWNotifier v0.5 I added the permission required to read K9Mail data, but some android devices started to make ADWNotifier crash cause of a “security exception“.

Well, if you find some issues with ADWNotifier crashing, try to uninstall and reinstall it as stated in the blog linked above.

Now today’s update:

I’ve been playing with code and found a “hacky” solution tu support EVERY app’s notificationsIt’s currently a Work In Progress so it’s disabled by default.

The good news:

It makes use of the android’s accessibility capabilities to gather notifications, so every app sending system notifications is supported.

The bad news:

-Not every app makes a proper usage of the android notification system, so not every app properly send the “event count” data to the system (damn Tweetdeck, fixit like official Twitter app)

-When an app does not provide a “event count” data, it will display just a “1″ even when there is more than 1 event.

-You need to manually enable ADWNotifier as an Accessibility Service (Settings/Accessibility). There’s a warning dialog on ADWNotifier

To-do:

-This method can show notifications from every app, so i’ll try to add a “blacklist/whitelist” for it so we can decide on which apps we want to gather the notifications.

-Make this “mode” to properly work with the old one, because it currently can overwrite the previous notifications mechanism.

    Hi,

I’ve just installed the 0.6 update, and I still have the issue for which I send you the log. So I think my problem is not related to the “security exception”.
Nevertheless, I tried to un/install ADW Notifier, and to restore all the permissions (as stated on the link you provided), but always the same result when launching ADW Notifier : Black screen w/o showing up the setting, and after 20-30 seconds the phone reboots.
Plus, I uninstalled K9mail, and w/o it, ADW Notifier launches fine, so, in the end, I’m wondering if it is not linked to a security exception, even it doesn’t show explicitly in the log (or perhaps I’m not use to read it ;-) ).
    So let me know.

    Best regards.

no, your issue is completely unrelated to the one I posted about, but I need some time to fix it, sorry.

We deliberately don’t specify the event count with TweetDeck because it is ugly as hell. Sorry…

If the “event count” data is not send by any app, could it be possible just to show the red plain circle without any number? It may be more visually appealing IMHO.

Yeah, I must think on anything about an “undefined” counter sign

Any chance that notifier could display numbers over a docked icon?

My gMail shortcut sits there. Routing notifications to a different app is… disconcerting.

My mistake — I didn’t see notification count because I dock the inbox label rather than the gmail shortcut.

      Thanks for a great tool

Everything works great except for Gtalk not sure why but even with Chuck Norriz mode enabled i dont get a red bubble in the upper left corner. Any thoughts on this? Does anyone else have this working on there phone? Thanks for all your hard work.

That’s cause gtalk uses a different service to update than the app

it would be nice if it could detect when a notification is gone and remove the count soon after.

Also since twidroyd has its own api, it would be nice if this app made use of it http://twidroyd.com/plugins/

For some reason it doesn’t work for me. I use the Norizz mode and i’m interested in capturing the Gmail and Google Voice notifications but none of them are working for me.

I have to manually go and fetch the e-mails or google voice messages.

    Please help me.

    Thanks
