MaytheForceCloseBeWithYou ADW.Launcher 1.1.3

Update 4: ADW.Launcher v1.1.3 “damn b**ch”

Seems my betatester #alphateam didn’t work so well…. how many bugfix releases!!!
Fixes:

  • Little bug with screens editor causing FCs under some circumstances
  • More minor dockbar fixes
  • Updated translations

If you are using a cyanogenmod custom rom, you can update the ADW version with the following:

Use adb push, rootexplorer or whatever method you want to update your system versions. Or wait for someone else’s posting flashable zips :-)

Update 3: ADW.Launcher v1.1.2

Little bugfix revision with the following:

  • Little bug with custom shirtcuts pictures being smaller than they should be
  • Minor dockbar fixes

Update 2: ADW.Launcher v1.1.1 released

Little bugfix revision with the following:

  • Updated some translations
  • The new Icons shader made icons smaller than they should be
  • Folder contents got messed/mixed with the app catalogs
  • Dockbar allows placing items at the drop position. This mean you can drop icons in between other icons
  • A few strange FCs

Old post

Long time, I know, but I’ve been making a lot of stuff for this hacky app during the last month…
Here is the brief changelog (for a better one, go to the Github project site, though i’ve not uploaded everything yet):

Fixes:

  • On Froyo, apps moved to SD now properly reload their icons when available (on desktop, action buttons, dockbar, folders, etc)
  • When using the desktop indicator “Top Dots” sometimes the top margin was missplaced to the left too.
  • Properly center the wallpaper with only 1 desktop screen
  • Sometimes the trackball/dpad scroll got stuck on the app drawer button
  • Fix old bug for the default screen setting not being applied until a restart
  • Fix colorpicker hardcoded dimensions to adapt different resolution devices
  • Added a few verifications for possible NPEs
  • Lowered a bit the swipe actions sensitivity (sometimes this caused widgets being difficult to longpress)
  • New “persistence” implementation….Read below

News:

  • New preferences to restart ADW or reset ADW settings
  • Changed screen cache option into a list to select the desired quality. If you use scrollable widgets this can help reducing errors
  • New option to disable wallpaper scrolling
  • Dockbar items now can be dragged out the dockbar instead just deleted (I mean DOCKBAR no ACTIONBUTTONS)
  • New options to force a specified orientation (between sensor/portrait/landscape)
  • Themes now can use a custom font for desktop shortcuts, app drawer and normal folders.
  • Themes now can use a new IconShader class thanks to kaydensigh!!!(read below)
  • New custom “App Catalogs” thanks to seast!!! (read below)
  • New “custom shortcut” option inside “add” menu (read below)
  • New “Screens editor” like Samsung’s TWLauncher (read below)

Ok, I’m gonna explain a few things:

New “Persistence”

This version uses a completely different persistence implementation, but remember this is really only needed for low memory devices like G1(Dream)/Mytouch3G(Sapphire).

  • By using this persistence option, ADW.Launcher will FORCE the screen to portrait mode. ADW Won’t auto rotate, even when opening the keyboard on those phones with hardware keyboards.
  • This way ADW would be really “hard to kill”, so you can always return to home really fast.
  • With this implementation seems the “widget freezing/not updating” issue is completely solved

Also important: if you use this option, a few chunk of your phone’s RAM will be always used by the launcher, so there’s less RAM for other apps…. you know what it means, use at your own risk.

If you’re running CyanogenMod rom version 6, try using its “Home in memory” option instead of this one.

Custom shirtcuts

Press menu/add (or long press on the home screen) and select Custom shortcut.
This is a little frontend to the standard “add shortcut” menu but allowing you to change the icon and the label. And even calling “hidden activities” of other apps

Icons can be selected from 3 sources:

  • Custom picture: Just select a picture on your phone and use it as icon
  • Crop picture: Just select a picture on your phone and crop the desired area to use as icon
  • ADWTheme IconPacks: Yeah, ADWThemes will be able to provide icon packs for you to use as source of custom icons :-)

Soon I’ll be making a new post with the required instructions and ADW.Theme.Template update so every theme developer can adapt their themes and provide icon packs. In the meanwhile, my free theme “Stock Blue” already has a demo icon pack for you to test

Screens editor

Kanging Samsung’s great launcher, i’ve developed this little tool to allow you organize your desktop. You can add, remove an swap screens on a really easy way!

  1. Press “menu/Edit”
  2. Scroll through your screens
  3. Use the overlay buttons to remove/add/swap screens
  4. Press your phone’s “back” key to exit

App Catalogs

New way to organize your apps. Make custom application catalogs by hiding the undesired ones and switch between them fast and easy!

  • Press your phone’s “menu” key while the app drawer is open
  • Select “choose group” to switch between different catalogs
  • Select “setup group” to edit the list of desired/hidden applications
  • You can remove a group by selecting “remove group”

ADWTheme icon shaders

Theme developers can use a new and “simple” way to apply effects to ALL the icons (but custom shortcuts) by adding a little XML file to the themes. I will be posting more info about that soon.
In the meanwhile, my free theme “Stock Blue” already has a demo shader for you to test

Ok, that’s all for now!!! Please don’t be harsh to me in case of (the ton of) errors!!!

I must say i love the update!
I absolutly love the addition of the Homescreen manager, it was onew of the two things i was missing after installing ADW on my Galaxy S
The other thing that i would have loved to have is the same App Drawer as TouchWiz 3.0, as in the ability to move and make new screens.
Kinda like the group thing only… not :P

I can probably explain it better if you don’t get it

Big Défault in new version with groups–> If we install a news app, this one goes in every groupe.

So if we have a Groupe “games” and we install “astro” from the market, it will be in games’s group and every others…. We have to unchek it in eatch groupe after…

Love the new update, it’s awesome in every way! One bug I found, my Folders I’ve created if I remove an app from them it doesn’t show it’s gone then next time I view it it shows ALL of my apps in them. But if I restart ADW, the folder is back to normal and has actually removed the app. Similar problem when adding apps to Folders.

Love the ability to hide apps, now I can easily hide all of the apps I have on screens already so I don’t have to scroll so much :)

Disappointed with new “System persistent” option… rooted Droid 1 on 2.2 here. In the last version it worked fine for me and I still had auto-orientation. Now I have to give that up. And if I disable SP I get the reloads/redraws. It was the best of both worlds before.

I use “Widgetlocker lockscreen” which asks to be the default home app to work properly. I know this has an effect because it takes that priority away from ADW… but like I said, the previous version seemed to handle everything beautifully. Now it’s like a step down.

Hi, I love this app and I think it’s the better app of the Market I’ve ever seen!
I was looking for a home replacement to Pantheon, and since I disovered ADW, I don’t have left it.

I know that you have enough to do but can I ask you for Something ?

First, can you change the icon for the Preferences because It’s the same as the Settings one and It’s not convenient !
Then, can you make a 3D drawer because it’s very beautiful for example on Laucher Pro.

Finally, I want to say that I’m keen on your transparent drawer and I hope you’ll stay the only one to have that ;-)

    Thanks from France.

    • August 22nd, 2010 2:16am

Love this home replacement, tons. Will keep on using.

But…I encountered a nice little hiccup while I was trying to be a tricky little douche with it. I had one home screen set up previously, clicked menu->edit, added a screen to the left of my main one, backed out of the edit, went to the newly created screen, went into menu->edit again, deleted the new screen (the one I just added and selected), backed out of edit again, and BAM, constant force closes on top of a black screen. Tried a reboot, still force closed on me. Had to hold the call button to get me into the voice dialer so I could launch Titanium Backup and restore my last ADW Launcher configuration to get myself out of it (I had updated my backup about 2 hours before, so it wasn’t a big deal).

So, it wasn’t particularly disastrous for me, but I could see someone getting into that force close loop and freaking out a bit.

Again, love the launcher, just giving you a heads up.

Hmmm, that’s odd. Doesn’t seem to be happening any more.

      • AnderWeb
      • August 22nd, 2010 12:11pm

Press your phone’s home button and select ADW as your launcher.
If that doesn’t work you may need to go Settings/Applications/Manage applications, look for your current launcher and “clear defaults”. Then hit your phone’s home button and select ADW.
An easier way (if you’re not running froyo) is by installing “Home switcher” from market.

Is there a way that you can create an invisible app drawer such as Launcher Pro. I did the long hold, then scroll up method, but it will still not let me create, add icons on the very bottom like LP. I want to stik with this app b/c of the horizontal scroll. can you help me or let me know if this is possible thanks.

Great work Dev. on ADW. Love it. Would be AWSOME if there was a way to completely get rid of the menu button on the home screen. To have nothing on there at all. I am using ADW to hide my status bar, have no additional windows, and use QuickDesk to get my my menu. Would love to have a completely clean screen you know. That would be killer.

    Hi
Great app. I really like the custom shortcut feature, as it makes it easy to give my desktop a custom look.

However’ would it be posible to have bigger icons on custom shortcuts. At the moment they are always smaller than standard icons, wich make them look somewhat bad on a qvga display.

Else I like all the new features. Keep up the great work :-)

Your ADW is great! It’s more faster than standart sony ericsson one, and more usefull! But I wan’t to ask – would iPhone like menu apps sorting? Catalogs are great, but… not comfortable, I use it only for hiding games from my friends)) And one more question – how can I use standart Contacts/Calls menu UI?

To all those asking about the desktop count option please see the NEW desktop ediit feature. On your home screen click your menu button and choose the Edit option. From there you can add, remove and swap around your home screens.

p.s. Ander, it would be sweet to be able to mark the default screen within the edit mode as well. Perhaps this could be my first little code contribution once I get my “stand alone” build working on my Droid X.

Great app, great to have the option to hide unused apps in the drawer.
    One question however.
I use swipe up to open/close the drawer, but it only opens. The only way to close the drawer is using my homekey or press the back button.
Tried to add this action to swipe down but same result.
The default action on my Xperia X10 mini pro (default launcher) is swipe up open drawer, swipe down close drawer. Do I miss something or can the drawer only be opened using swipe actions.

      • AnderWeb

Great fix with the custom icons. I notice they also looks better now, as the scaling use Anti alasing. Niiiice

However. I noticed that widgets and icons change to a lower color resolution when i drag the desktop screens. So there is color banning in widgets when they scroll. :-)

Feature request: when creating custom shortcuts, would it be posible the “steal” the icon from and eixting app. So eg. I could set K9 emial. To have the same icon as the default mail app.

Other wise. Great work again. The best launcher out there by fare.

      • AnderWeb
      • August 23rd, 2010 2:57pm

The color banding is cause the new low quality cache type to save memory. You can return to the previous type selecting “auto” (system settings, cache type)

The Screen Editor is GREAT. That was something I really wanted. You must have read my mind.

The other thing that would be cool (for me at least, but I don’t know if it is possible) would be different wallpapers for each home screen.
