ADW.Launcher 0.8 released!

UPDATE:

A lot of people complained about the new way to layout items on desktop.

I know some widgets are being missaligned, but as actually our phones are not designed to display so much rows/columns, they overlap when putting  alot of them.

What i didn’t notice is that even on 4×4 the display was so bad :P (my fault).

So I’ve released 0.8.1 with an OPTION inside screen preferences (disabled by default) so you can turn on/off the new “Auto Stretching” feature.

  • If you leave it disabled, it will show icons/widgets like previous releases (but if you set up too many columns/rows, your icons will overlap)
  • If you enable it, icons/wodgets will try to “autofit” inside the existing space (use it if you hace overlapping issues) :-)

EOF.

Previous post:

After a while, i’ve been able to put a few things on the “codewriter” and after some testing I think is ready for release.

News:

  • Backup/Restore options inside settings, thank everyone to @Wysie_Soh!!!
  • Support for scrollable widgets (not too many atm, but check PureMessenger widget, is awesome!)
  • Support for setting just 1 desktop screen (some people asked for this)
  • EXPERIMENTAL Support for upto 8×8 desktop columns/rows. I’ve mainly  added this as petition from PaulObrien
  • Now Folders/LiveFolders obey to the “Hide labels” option :-)
  • Support for the “longawaited” extra shirtcuts. If you want to replace the desktop dots with a pair more LAB/RAB, just go settings.

Fixes:

  • On “previews” mode you still could click widgets/icons
  • The Applications button worked really bad on Froyo if dockbar was disabled.
  • Some other minor things.

Enjoy!

Wow, this Launcher is getting awesomer with each version. Now if only Koxx released the scrollable version of his calendar widgets…

Yes, hoping that the scrollable calendar will be released soon!

Some widgets are strech now in my Motorla MIlestone, and some are giving me FC when I try to remove from desktop… like Pure Messenger.

hi, nice new version, tested desktop scaling options, 5 cols/rows do not work propperly with some (if not most) widgets…

    • June 14th, 2010 10:55pm

Works well on my dell streak, having 8 columns/rows works fine in portrait but the font is cut-off in landscape. Turning off the labels works great, but I like the labels so I turned it down to 7×7.

    • Tim van der Leeuw
    • June 14th, 2010 11:19pm

    Awesome!!!! :-)

Really like having 5 rows of icons on my desktop, works well in portrait mode!
In landscape the label text is cut of, as noted by others. In landscape I would like to have 4 rows and 5 columns… But I know why that’s not doable :-)
I didn’t yet try a 5-columns setting in portrait. Also didn’t yet try Pure Messenger…. but looking forward to trying scrolling widgets in near future! Cool! :-)

PS: Originally I wished for having 4 shortcut-buttons. But by now, I actually like the launcher desktop-switching buttons too much to give them up for more shortcuts :-)

Looks great, found one minor bug tho. It seems when you have adw displaying 4×5 and open a folder the folder only fills the normal 4×4 size leaving a gap at the bottom

  2. Much love <3 on this one Anderwebs! Looking great

Has anyone managed to set the 3rd and 4th icon yet once enabled from the options? I try to drag shortcuts to them, but the only one that highlights is the bin, giving a prompt to uninstall.

Great work as always.the extra action buttons arte awesome would out be possible on the next update to have a setting that would allow us to change app dock icon to a different icon from a pack or something. Other than that this is perfect. Thanks again.

Is something off center in the launcher/shortcuts area? I think it might be the grid button. If you hide the background for only the shortcuts, you will see how the grid is off center by comparison to the tinted box behind it. Everything else works great though.

    • jp
    • June 15th, 2010 1:41am

It appears to be a scaling issue here; the “oversized” highlights and the stretching of the Widgets… I also cannot remove the background of the app drawer button.

I figure you’ll be figuring out a fix.

I’m running 2.2, Droid, second release, no themes over it. 4×4 for desktop. I hope you can solve it :)

    Love the two added shortcuts.

Great App. I had tried the earlier versions, but they hadn’t converted me yet. Having tried the update, I am converted. One request would be with the scrollwheel I can’t select the application launcher or the dock(shirtcuts) to open that way.

I am using this on Droid Eris so let me know if its just my device but, I really enjoy the feature of being able to have up to 8 columns and rows in the main menu but,… it stretches and skews all the widgets. Any tips Dev? Now with that note said. I really want to say that I appreciate this app soo much. Its really fantastic.. smooth.. a great option for me to get away from sense ui… which is great.. but doesn’t allow the accessiblity to quick apps that the ADW launch has. I have told atleast ten of my friends about this and they have switched to it from their previous home apps. I really am impressed. Thank you greatly!!

Your ADW launcher is great and i love it. New version got better but still I have some problem with Furoyo. If you have apps installed on SD cards, when you boot your phone, app icons are not refreshed after launching launcher. That is the only one issue I see with latest version.

Also, latest version got slower when you flip pages with drawer.

    Anyway, Thanks for good work!

Great launcher, but I had to revert back to .78. I didn’t like the way the widgets look (stretched out) and if you had a widget (1×1) next to a program, it would look off-center. Will wait for this to be fixed before updating. Like I said, up to this point, the launcher has been great.

“if you had a widget (1×1) next to a program, it would look off-center”

I second this, even when I use the original 4×4 setting on my Nexus One, the 1×1 widget and the app shortcut is not aligned on the same row.

Hey man, thank you for making this app. Android doesn’t listen to its first customers when we supported the Google G1 and then we were not updated after the new phones came out. But the devs out there do care. Thanks a lot man, brought a lot of life back into my G1. Looking forward to more updates and this app going far.

Thx for the up! I always love and use your launcher! 2 noticeable issues come with this update though:

    1) when I use the original 4×4 setting on my Nexus One, the 1×1 widget and the app shortcut is not aligned on the same row in home screen.

    2) the app drawer open as fast as b4, but there is a very noticeable delay when showing the text (names of the apps)! The names only show half a sec after the icons are shown! In previous builds the text always come together with the icons simultaneously.

    and….

    3) the dots delay is still there.

Really thx for your work, especially at this time of World Cup! Cheers!

Will you publish again the system version , because i really like the “lock home app in memory” option but with alternative replacement this option doesn’t working , and it’s pretty annoying to wait for widgets and shortcuts to come back on the screen after using something on my g1 with cyanogenmod 5

    hola,
    saludos y buen trabajo

I’ve been following this launcher since the introduction of the nexus dots and previews. You (AnderWeb)don’t need me to tell you that your Launcher is second to none, but I will anyway. There’s no other alternative I would use.

Sadly, I’ve some, uhm, peeves you can say. This is no baseless criticism, just for the better of your launcher :x

I use the donut version because CM5 (in my opinion) cannot handle even the system version of ADWLauncher. After every app I enter/exit, the launcher is killed in order to free up RAM. (Yea, I reverted back to donut just so I can use your launcher :] ) I hope you would create a system one for donut that works with bettercut and has vibrations (I adb pushed your market one)

Anyway, the new zoom effect in .8 looks great, smoother than ever. But the zoom in/out issue still exist. It’s not exactly centered, no biggie. I’m just putting it out there. Also, the app names after zooming in seems delayed. It might look more “natural” if it were to appear quicker.

There’s also the transparency issue with the “All Apps” button. You can press apps on the blank areas next to the “All Apps” icon.

.8 introduced that widget/icon highlight issue as you might’ve already seen or read about.

My OCD side kicks in when I see the old drawer appear. The apps are really, really close to the status bar. Too close. As oppose to any other launcher out there, it makes this look awkward. And there’s too much space between the fourth column and the “All Apps” button.

Sorry for any distraught I cause :x

When apps are stored to sd card in froyo, the shortcuts don’t display right and Widgets are unuseable.

      • AnderWeb
      • June 15th, 2010 3:33pm

You shouldn’t install widgets to sdcard (suggested by google, not me).
And as froyo isn’t “official” yet and source code is not yet released, i cannot do anything. You just need to restart the launcher for your icons/wodgets appear (on every phone reboot).

Or just move your apps to phone mem.

If you’ve enabled the “Hide AB bg” option, yeah, is hard to drop icons there. Upcoming 0.8.2 will (hopefully) fix that :-)
Meanwhile, disable that option, drop your icons and then enable it again.

In other launchers I used to return to home from open application drawer or laucher settings by pressing home button. In adwlauncher it close drawer or settings and shows preview, not desktop. Very inconvenient to me. I am not shure it a bug, but i’d like to see such behavior at least as an option.
