ADW.Launcher 0.8.9

UPDATE: 0.9.0

As usual, when there’s a new feature, something goes wrong or something gets forgotten. So here’s another little bugfix release :P

Fixes/News:

  • You can now scroll through Folders/LiveFolders besides the swiping up/down actions.
  • Added an option to select the swiping/home bindings to “do nothing”
  • If you disable the dockbar, it won’t show even though you bind it to swipe/home button
  • Little translations updates and minor fixes
  • To all the people building system versions: SORRY. I left some froyo specific code inside the system branch… and this branch is meant to be built agains android 2.1 tree… so there’s the #fail!!! #blameMyself!!!

Old Post

New release, new features, new bugs (yeah, I’m sure) and new fixes.

News:

  • Support for swipe up/down gestures thanks to @wjaxxx. Go into ADWSettings/System settings to bind each gesture to your favourite action.
  • Experimental support for “Froyo  apps2SD“. Now it should properly show/hide the apps you install on the SD when required.

Fixes:

  • Created a “fallback” code cause longpressing items sometimes caused FCs. Now, only if you’re under low memory, longpressing an item would draw a plain rectangle instead the widget/icon.
  • Messed a little bit with the persistence code. Don’t know if it will fix the previous issues, cause i haven’t seen any issues myself… but a lot of users do.

Please, if you  want me to help on your issues, you MUST provide me info about your Phone/Rom/Settings.
If you find FCs, I CANNOT do anything without logcats, so READ HERE on howto properly get them.

System version:

As many of you know, Cyanogen added an own system version of ADW.Launcher with custom defaults and tweaks inside his CyanogenMod rom for Nexus One/Dream/Shapphire devices.

If I wanted to release a system version, i would be forced to make one build for cyanogenrom users (well, 2 cause of the mdpi-only users), one for other “cyanogenmod based roms” users, the “alternate build” for other roms not based on cyanogenmod…. That’s a bit time consuming. My github repo has my main 3 branches usually synced, so everyone could build a version for their tastes/needs.

Other rom developers asked me for/already did integrate ADW.Launcher system version inside their roms. So he usually build from my source tree or tweak/modify it.

So depending on your rom/device/needs/tastes, etc, you can check for system builds on different sites:

Status bar keeps hiding after 0.9.0 update, even if I choose it to always show.
    LG GW620, 1.6, Zacpod rom.
I’d also like to suggest an option to not keep showing the widget size preference after inserting a new widget in the screen.
By the way, keep up the great work!

  1. Hello. I have been having this problem for some releases. I think since 0.8.7.

ADW.Launcher appears to quit unexpectedly with no FC error of any kind.

All I see on the screen is that is is suddenly blank and all of the Widgets rebuild.

I happened to have debugging running when it last occurred and pasted all of the events from when I hit the home button and ADW terminated to screen timing out.

I am running stock FRF83 on a locked N1. I get ADW.Launcher from the Market only. The version is 0.9.0 Standalone.

    • It probably wasn’t clear before, since I pasted the link into the URL field, but here is the pastebin link: http://pastebin.com/7A24fGES

I think the relavent error is:

      06-28 21:53:27.488: ERROR/JavaBinder(7720): !!! FAILED BINDER TRANSACTION !!!

      Any ideas?

where the bar that when pressed, closed the dockbar?
if I open the dockbar I can not go, I find the arrow that hid the dockbar

    • June 29th, 2010 10:59am

Just an idea: if you could redesign the dockbar to look something like a half circle, then by wiping the apps would come up from beneath, you could build in something like a button in the center (where the dockbar revolves around) that closes the dockbar (I don’t really know whether this is comprehensible English – not my mother language, sorry!). It would look a little bit like the htc sense home screen…

Hei AnderWeb, really really a great job!
    I have a few questions:
    1) how can I change the order of icons inside the dockbar?
    2) when I move an icon in the dockbar (or in the action buttons) how can I move back it in the screen desktop?
    3) is it possible to have icon highlights that don’t cover the text label, but only the icon?

    THANKS!!!

BUG: moving icons to extreme right

I have 5 desktop (1 to 5, left to right).

When moving an icon from desktop 4 to 5, I have to drag it on the right side of the screen #4. If I release the icon on the right edge (crossing the edge) of screen #5 there is a bug: android.process.acore closes which causes ADW to restart.

info: v0.9.0, system, mdpi, on galaxy.

otherwise adz is really good !

nice update, making an older feature unneeded for me and fixing an annoyance in android itself.
i liked this home replacement because it let me “dock” task OS(task manager/closer/switcher) next to the applist button, but now i need to think of something different to put there since i can map home to taskOS.
and the swiping options are useful to make sliding down the notification bar more responsive.
i liked this app since the first time i installed it, but every update seems to add some new good feature.

still 1 thing i’d like to see though. an option to hide apps.
i always hate how pre-installed junk pollutes my app list.

ps. for those who have trouble with status bar hiding: check the swype gesture settings for ADW launcher, it might be configured to hide/reappear when you swype up or down.

So I’m finally using ADW.Launcher… actually spent the time to get it set up (I had been using LauncherPro) and I love it and all its little features! Great work!

I do have a problem/question. Periodically, when I go back to my home screen (ADW.Launcher) all icons and widgets will be gone and the action buttons will be blank (with RAB and LAB in place of icons). 20-30 seconds later everything will come back. Now, my guess is that Android ends the process as it’s cleaning memory, but I do have the persist option checked (thinking that it should prevent the process from being closed). Is it Android’s cleaning, or something else? Anyone else having this issue?

    Hi Anderweb,
I love the adw launcher. I am currently running into an issue though. I have a motorala droid running cyanogen 5.0.8 oc to 1000mhz. I am running .9 standalone and for the last two days the launcher has been restarting itself several times a day (at least 20 per). It happens when I back out of an application using the back key on the phone itself. It’s running great otherwise but this is an annoyance. Is their anything I can do?

            • July 1st, 2010 10:27pm

Well, i’m not so experienced dev, but using less widgets/less memory intensive widgets should help.

The more screens, widgets, shortcuts, etc you have, the more memory you’ll use.
Then, when you open another memory intensive app (like browser, youtube, etc), android kills other things (including launcher).

After disabling the persistence option, try to reboot the phone and check how it performs.

A few problems I have found with the newest version:

    1) When I tried to scroll in Pure Calendar sometimes it tried to swipe right or left. I think it needs to be tweaked.
    2) The Snowstorm weather widget will not work in ADW

Third thing would be a feature request:
    3) I want to set a different action for tap and tap and hold on the Home Button. I want the tap to go to my home screen and the tap and hold to go to my contacts screen because their is no phone button on android phones.

I will be willing to use ADW and donate money if these are fixed.

Awesome work dude. Only thing I’d ask is to be able to set the number of desktop columns and rows for Portrait and Landscape seperately, like with the drawer. Since the milestone/droid is widescreen you can fit an extra row in portrait, but then when you switch to landscape it’s all squished. If you could set these independently you could make full use of the space.

I just got my first Android phone the other day, a Garminfone, and I was trying to set a picture as my ADW wallpaper but it forces me to crop it so it doesn’t fill the whole screen. ADW gives the option of selecting wallpaper from two areas: Wallpaper or Wallpaper Gallery. Wallpaper Gallery doesn’t require cropping but the only wallpaper in there us the blue default ADW one. Is there any way I can save my own images to the Wallpaper Gallery? Thanks!

I hate to say this, but the new launcherpro features are sweet: http://www.launcherpro.com/?p=99. I’m still an ADW man, but I would love to see something like these message counts implemented. Or the ability to put 1×1 widgets on the LAB/RAB so I could use my Handcent widget.

      • July 3rd, 2010 1:03am

Ok, I’ll add that, the 3d drawer and will remove the custom columns/rows, the galaxy drawer, the swipe gestures, the hidden dockbar so you can use launcherpro with another name.

        • July 5th, 2010 8:56pm

Sorry, didn’t mean to sound so douchey. I find ADW.Launcher to be, far and beyond, the most stable free launcher available. That is what I love about it. And the amount that you allow users to customize the experience is really superb.

The Swipe gestures are brilliant, custom columns/rows are great, and the galaxy drawer is very neat. To be honest, I don’t use the dockbar (I greatly favor double RAB/LAB), but I’ve been meaning to play around with it…

Anyway, support for 1×1 widgets would be neat to see at some point in the future. But keep up all the good work!

Is there any way to hide some apps from the dock? I know advanced launcher has that functionality that you can set from extended menu, create submenus and hide apps. ADW launcher can also do that? I wish it could, it is a really good feature I do not want all the apps specially backend apps disply in the list in dockbar…also i would like to hide some apps as sometimes my phone goes in different hands.

Hi, Is it possible to add the functionality of “Hide App” in ADW launcher. This feature was available in the advanced launcher app.

This ADW launcher is amazing, really cool but only this one feature is missing.

I have about 120 apps and I do not want apps like Anycut or some backend app keep showing on the app drawer..

There are some secret apps, that needs to be hidden incase the fone is stolen or lost or goes in wrong hands. Please add this feature. Thank you so much!

    Great launcher!

I switched to ADW from Launcher Pro a few weeks ago. But now switched back bcos of the following 2 features:

recent “rows/columns” makes it too complicated and inconvenient
too complicated even for techies like me.
and too inconvenient that I have to choose the widget size everytime I add a widget
its a great idea but needs better implementation, especially for most normal users.
to be honest, for most users, 5 rows would be most practical.

also a horizontal scrolling dock like Launcher Pro would be really great! It goes naturally along with the left/right swiping of screen.
I know now i can choose “up/down” swipe to reveal the additional dock, but its just not as “natural” as left/right swipe.

Look forward to your next version!

      • lou2s
      • July 4th, 2010 7:59am

One of the reasons I choose ADW over LauncherPRO is this “up/down” swipe to the hidden dock rather than left/right swipe. This is more natural to me. Leave “left/right” swipe to screen scroll! Let each independent swipe gesture hv different purpose!

Again this is personal choice. And I am in love with the way ADW is. Thx AnderWeb.

Everything I find here requires me to open/install from the market on my phone precluding me from making the changes I’d like to make. So is there a link to the file somewhere?
