ADW.Launcher 0.8.9

UPDATE: 0.9.0

As usual, when there’s a new feature, something goes wrong or something gets forgotten. So here’s another little bugfix release :P

Fixes/News:

  • You can now scroll through Folders/LiveFolders besides the swiping up/down actions.
  • Added an option to select the swiping/home bindings to “do nothing”
  • If you disable the dockbar, it won’t show even though you bind it to swipe/home button
  • Little translations updates and minor fixes
  • To all the people building system versions: SORRY. I left some froyo specific code inside the system branch… and this branch is meant to be built agains android 2.1 tree… so there’s the #fail!!! #blameMyself!!!

Old Post

New release, new features, new bugs (yeah, I’m sure) and new fixes.

News:

  • Support for swipe up/down gestures thanks to @wjaxxx. Go into ADWSettings/System settings to bind each gesture to your favourite action.
  • Experimental support for “Froyo  apps2SD“. Now it should properly show/hide the apps you install on the SD when required.

Fixes:

  • Created a “fallback” code cause longpressing items sometimes caused FCs. Now, only if you’re under low memory, longpressing an item would draw a plain rectangle instead the widget/icon.
  • Messed a little bit with the persistence code. Don’t know if it will fix the previous issues, cause i haven’t seen any issues myself… but a lot of users do.

Please, if you  want me to help on your issues, you MUST provide me info about your Phone/Rom/Settings.
If you find FCs, I CANNOT do anything without logcats, so READ HERE on howto properly get them.

System version:

As many of you know, Cyanogen added an own system version of ADW.Launcher with custom defaults and tweaks inside his CyanogenMod rom for Nexus One/Dream/Shapphire devices.

If I wanted to release a system version, i would be forced to make one build for cyanogenrom users (well, 2 cause of the mdpi-only users), one for other “cyanogenmod based roms” users, the “alternate build” for other roms not based on cyanogenmod…. That’s a bit time consuming. My github repo has my main 3 branches usually synced, so everyone could build a version for their tastes/needs.

Other rom developers asked me for/already did integrate ADW.Launcher system version inside their roms. So he usually build from my source tree or tweak/modify it.

So depending on your rom/device/needs/tastes, etc, you can check for system builds on different sites:

  1. Hello, AnderWeb. I love your launcher. It is the smoothest one I’ve tested so far. I have a cool suggestion that you might want to consider in future releases. It’s vertical homescreens. That way you can swipe up, down, left, right, to get to each homescreen in one swipe if you had 4 homescreens enabled or like different combinations for different combinations of homescreen numbers. Anyways I hope this comes to fruition as it could be AWESOME! Thanks for your time.

Seems to be an issue with updating widgets when using the persistant in memory option. They update for a bit, but after a short while they stop, but only visually. They still seem to respond in the background still, but only update after a screen orientation change.

That’s why I always suggest not using that option… :(

this is the BEST home replacement app. would be awesome if u could do it like ubuntus desktop cube and rotate it. i have no complaints hands down one of my favorite app

  2. Apps with install to SD are shown twice in the luncher.

Hi. Great job on launcher and many thanks to make it free.. One suggestion from my site though. SCREEN PREFERENCES/ DESKTOP LAYOUT/ DESKTOP COLUMNS AND ROWS.. we need customization for landscape and portrait mode otherwise it gets ugly when switching between modes. Thanks.

      • July 6th, 2010 12:46pm

You cannot do that unless you completely remove all desktop icons/widgets on each rotation

    AnderWeb,
ADW Launcher is one of the best launcher i had seen and i just shifted to yours recently but found few problems.

All of my notification sounds and ringtones are reset to a ringtone(facebook status tone). I tried to set them back from settings but it does not list any music files(not even the ones that comes factory installed). I opened my music gallery and it does not show any of my music files. Then used Astro file manager to browse through the files and tried to set the ringtone from there but the set as ringtone option is disabled. Where am i going wrong?

I had to uninstall ADW Launcher and reboot my phone to get back my old state.

I own a Samsung galaxy spica with 2.1update.

I just dont want to ignore such a cool app. so i just shared my problem here. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Thankx and best wishes on your other projects!

I don’t think a launcher app can mess with your sounds, so take a look cause maybe you did anything else…

    Hi ander,

I must say I love the gestures. It’s nice to swipe instead of pinching to preview screens :)

Any hope of adding an option to make the dockbar open by default instead of the RAB/LAB? I find myself having the dockbar open 95% of the time.

      • AnderWeb
      • July 7th, 2010 5:21pm

I also have the dockbar open almost all the time, but opening it is an easy task and I have a few other things to work on.
      Maybe on a future release… don’t know :)

I am new to Android and my Samsung Galaxy S. So far I am loving it. Touch Wiz is not bad really but ADW Launcher is the best customizable launcher for me. I will save your time praising for the great features and focus on some of my concerns:

I cannot seem to go back from the hidden menu to the dock bar. Pls Fix. The icons can also get some better selections like in Launcher Pro.

Also, I like it how Launcher Pro has the message counts and missed calls count badges which are very useful.

You are my hero! Thanks! :)

      • July 7th, 2010 5:20pm

The dockbar is the hidden menu.
When you open it you can drop there icons, and just swipe down over it to close.
You can bind the swipe up/down actions to open/close it too

  3. 1x Bug Report – Missing the “Screen Count” option under Screen preferences. I’m using CyanogenMod 5.0.8 Stable on the HTC Dream.

Scratch that, its the flick up feature.. I recommend using a different default action.. that is not user friendly.

hiya…love the idea, great reviews but I have NO IDEA on how to get it working! have an xperia x10, I’ve installed it, not an option to ‘open’? Am new to android and all things touchscreen..so indulge an idiot pretty please? Its not showing in my app list, the only thing I can find to do with ADW is long press on home screen and it gives me the option to use your default wallpaper…thats it! lol…HELP!!?!! x

Tap your phone home button and you should get a picker to select what launcher to use.
If that doesn’t work, install home switcher from market to easily switch between them

  4. Hi Anders,
Started using ADW since it was made default with CM. Love the features! Would be wonderful if you had a doc that explained the huge number of options you have! If there is such a doc, can you please point me to it?

While running ADW v0.9.0 w/CM6 and testing out the Froyo method of A2SD. On startup any applications that are located on the SD card have the “Generic Application” icon (http://i.imgur.com/tvFKP.png). I have found that if I then backup my ADW desktop configuration (or use a previously backed up one) then restore it (forcing ADW to restart,) the icons come back to what they should be.

Applications will launch fine while using their generic icons and as far as I can tell will keep using generic icons until ADW has been restarted somehow, it’s just a nuisance.

Tracing back through logs it looks like it may be an SD mounting issue (still digging…), but I didn’t know if this was something to watch out for with the upcoming change since a mounted SD card will make the apps inaccessible.

      • July 8th, 2010 9:46pm

Do you mean icons placed on the desktop or on the app drawer?

        • Jeeves

            • July 9th, 2010 1:50am

            Much appreciated.

To clarify deeper on my previous answer.
When the desktop icons are generic, the icons in the drawer are not.

Here is a shot of the desktop:
            http://i.imgur.com/oA0p4.png

As you can imagine, the three icons on the left are all using Froyo A2SD while the 3 on the right are all located Internal. A restart of ADW brings them all back to normal.

I have tried disabling “Screen Caching” and “System Persistent” was never enabled. Neither setting seems to have an effect.

Thank you for all your hard work.

I’ve dug through the logs I’ve taken and all I see are random entries noting (lines 40-66):
            http://pastebin.com/1MLhvsGL

Odd, but I’m not sure what they have to do with at all. So, I apologize if I’m going down the wrong path.

Hey, just saying I LOVE this launcher. ADW and LauncherPro are the BEST homescreen replacements I’ve ever used. I really love the smoothness and customizability of ADW. There is one thing I would really like though. Would it be possible for you to add an option to enable fly-in/fly-out animations for all of the windows like on stock nexus one? I never really cared for the Sense-style “swyping” in and out. The zoom just looks so much more elegant.

I also wonder if it is possible to add the 3D draw option. I know it can give performance issues but I think an option for it would be great. I love the way it looks.

Thanks again for developing such a wonderful, free app!

  5. Like to see the home button bind to recent app pop up window ;)

Glad to have a 1 page home screen, not many launchers have this option.

I have another problem with ADW and froyo. The widgets seem unresponsive and they don’t seem to refresh properly. For instance, the youtube widget search and record buttons don’t work with ADW and they work well with stock launcher. The power widget does not update, lets say I turn off wifi, the wifi will turn off but the widget won’t update saying the off status… Could you please look into that? I’ve been forced to stop using ADW because of those bugs and would love to start using it again…

    IDEA: normal dockbar scroll
Scrolling has been implemented in the new dockbar, but my idea is to implement it also in the standard dockbar.
So if you swipe left or right RAB, APPS and RAB change, as if there were multiple standard dockbars

I managed to get the same bug with the youtube widget only once in launcher pro. But i’ve trashed the widget and put it back and its started working again and I can’t replicate anymore. In ADW tho, the bug is always present for me. Here is the list of all the wigdets I’m running. Facebook, music, youtube, beautiful widget small, pure calendar, power control, silent mode onoff, search. I’ll check the logs next time it happens.

    • steve garon
    • July 10th, 2010 7:34pm

Nothing shows up in the logs when I press the widget buttons and nothing happens… I do have a couple of focus ignore warnings saying that a windows already has the focus, but I doubt this is related to ADW since there no reference to ADW.

Use adb to extract your data like:
      adb pull /data/system/packages.xml

Search inside that file your installed launchers and if they hold the “BIND_APPWIDGET”permission.

Question: You’ve added a Donate button in your app and I’m building an android app too and would like to do the same. Can you tell me how you did it? Cause I was looking at the paypal donate section and they where talking about a form but to me does not really makes sense in the context of an android button.

Other Question: Is your launcher open source and if so where can I get the source?

It’s just a link, the source is on github.com/anderweb
