ADW.Launcher 0.8.7 arrived!
EDIT: 0.8.8 “bugfixes edition” released.
So after receiving a lot of reports, i’ve been fighting some issues with the new features and packed up a bugfix release on the market and on my github.
It currently fixes the issue with phone rotation when you had the “Persistence” mode enabled, some screen flickering/darkening issues when using the indicators autohide option, and the indicators showing over the app drawer issue as well, the “fade labels” drawer option is finally “properly working” and some updated/new translations.
Sorry everyone ;-)
Old post:
Hey you all :-)
Another little update for this thing.
Fixes:
- Folders now open to the whole screen again, not limited to 4×4
- FC if rotating the phone with the menu open.
- Finally fixed the “widget reappearing” bug when dropped inside ActionButtons or Dockbar
- Search widget can be resized too.
- Dockbar items now don’t get messed when launcher receives a shortcut intent.
- Rearranged settings screens.
- Hopefully some memory FCs on longpressing items.
News:
- New option to tweak Galaxy style app drawer (the horizontal one) page margins (thanks to Julian_Chu)
- You can now add unlimited icons to the dockbar and scroll through them (Read hints later).
- Desktop dots now allow faster navigation trough screens, removed the delay.
- New optional desktop indicator with 3 different styles/layouts and options (Read hints later).
- The long awaited but good for nothing “Keep launcher in memory” option (Read hints later).
Comments/Hints:
The “Keep launcher in memory” option (ADWSettings/System preferences/System persistent) uses an Activity property clearly discouraged by google, but some users find it useful… Is disabled by default, so enable it at your own risk :-)
The “unlimited dockbar icons” feature is as risky as every addition to your launcher. The more icons you add—>the more memory you use—>the more chances of getting FCs. Is the same as with widgets, etc.
While making this new feature, i found myself accidentally closing the dockbar a lot, so i’ve finally REMOVED the “close button” (the little pointing-donw arrow over the dockbar). If you want to close the dockbar, just swipe down over it . If you do it fast, you won’t accidentally “click” any icon inside.
The new desktop indicators are also an optional feature. By default the indocator shown will be the “Galaxy” indicator (Dots pager, like the samsung galaxy drawer) on top. You can switch between this one or just the typical small line moving along the bottom/top edge of your screen. You can also turn autoHide on/off or completely disable the indicators.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Since long ago, this project involves a lot of great developers/users collaborating on making this thing better/worse every release ;-). They help with translations, patches, fixes, new features….
I’d like you to know them all, and thank to all of them:

System version:
As many of you know, Cyanogen added an own system version of ADW.Launcher with custom defaults and tweaks inside his CyanogenMod rom for Nexus One/Dream/Shapphire devices.
If I wanted to release a system version, i would be forced to make one build for cyanogenrom users (well, 2 cause of the mdpi-only users), one for other “cyanogenmod based roms” users, the “alternate build” for other roms not based on cyanogenmod…. That’s a bit time consuming. My github repo has my main 3 branches usually synced, so everyone could build a version for their tastes/needs.
Other rom developers asked me for/already did integrate ADW.Launcher system version inside their roms. So he usually build from my source tree or tweak/modify it.
So depending on your rom/device/needs/tastes, etc, you can check for system builds on different sites:
- xda-developers forum (usually inside Nexus One Android development board)
- Dr_Cloverdale “repo”.
- Pershoot droid basement custom builds.
- inFECT BOX23 Mirror
keep up the great work… best launcher out there, has continued to stay snappy and slick even with the additions (unlike some other current launchers that seem to be directly competing!)
Does this update also improve the handling of scrollable widgets, or not? I thought I read something about merges from Launcher+
i LOVE this – it adds what is missing from the G1…i LOVE it.
Why is this…..Everytime I upgrade to the latest version, directly after the installation, my phone’s dialer appears and I cannot get it off the screen. I cannot ‘go back’, I cannot access the home screen – the dialer is just stuck. The only way to get away is to reboot the phone.
I’m on a G1 with Eclair (Superbad 1.6)….
Or is it just me that are having this issue?
Thanks for the GREAT-GREAT app.
Bert
I don’t hv this issue (though I m on Nexus One 2.2)
Usually right after update I will press Home key to set ADW Launcher as default right away. Dunno if this may help u in next update…
Great! First change I see right after the update is the dots at the top, interesting….Now I an going to play with the settings, along with the Slovenia vs England game! Thx AnderWeb!
The long awaited but good for nothing “Keep launcher in memory” option (Read hints later).
In case you don’t know if you use a Mytouch 3g without that option enabled you will have to wait for launcher to restart after using any app. I MEAN ANY APP.
its like this:
-open camera
-take picture
-close camera
-wait from 5-8 seconds while launcher restarts
-rinse
-repeat
I state that’s “good for nothing” cause google says it so, obviously depends on a lot of variables (phone/rom/apps/widgets/services/etc etc)
Just read the link provided.
Please bring back (or make optional) the little “close” arrow from the dockbar. It seemed to close much easier. I keep launching or dragging icons on the desktop to the recycle bin…
Is easy once you get used to.
You mush swipe from within the dockbar, not from the desktop.
Just place your finger on one dockbar icon and swipe down fast! :)
I understand and I’m sure I will get used to it, but my preference is to have it. Not to mention it looked cool and had a very polished feel to it.
I agree, love the little arrow for the dockbar. Why remove it in the first place?
Thanks for all your work.
Hoping for a 3D version soon.
Fantastic launcher, and a wonderful update!
I’m wondering if we couldn’t just use the back button to close the dockbar while it’s open? I have my home button to open/close it for now, but I always press back to try and close it since it seems more intuitive.
Why do you need call rights?
Because if you add a “Direct Call shortcut” to your desktop, that permission is needed for the shortcut to work.
Perhaps I’m dumb (highly likely) but with no base .apk provided it kinda makes this moot as aside from compiling it myself (no thanks) there doesn’t appear to be a way to install this. I have an evo, and I followed one of the links, which only has .86 and it just wont install.
Have you tried the Android market?
I was just introduced to your launcher when I upgraded my rom, I have to say, keep up the good work. Where do we submit feature requests? I would like to request unread counts on messages, mail, gmail, and dialer when in the dock. I currently use the SMS unread count widget but, as everything is moving to the dock, wont be able to. I think this would be a great feature!
After installing the last update, program became very slow.
Samething is wrong here
i Love the ADW Launcher and the Option with the Statusbar is fantastic but i use the Homekey to see all the 7 Desktop sites.
Can you make please a little icon or the Option to push the Statusbar with the indicator Down. Or something else maybe…
SnZ
Please allow an option to turn off the indicator (dots/lines on top or bottom) in the next update. I would enjoy that choice because I do not enjoy the company of thus indicator.
u can untick “show desktop indicator” under UI settings.
hey, can you please add app open/close screen animations and maybe 3D app drawer?
in the 0.8.7:
bar no longer appears to close the dockbar.
dockbar when it displays, whether or if I have to open any application to close the dockbar.
the rest works perfectly
——
no aparece más la barra para cerrar el dockbar.
cuando muestra los dockbar, si o si tengo que abrir alguna aplicación para que se cierre el dockbar.
lo demas anda perfecto
THANK U U !!!!!! u fixed the dots problem .. good update please fix the highlight color for the widget & 3d drawer would be awesome
Superb job.
You might already be aware that the latest 8.7 was a couple of quirks:
In desktop landscape, some icons/clock, etc is cutoff.
In app drawer landscape, the settings to control how many columns does not make any change; mine is set to (3) columns and it will not change otherwise.
Thanks!
I love this launcher. Really amazing work though I did like the little arrow for the second dock. I actually don’t mind the dots like some people are complaining about.
I rather have you optimize the launcher rather than adding all the possible bloat people are asking for and then complain about how slow…blah, blah blah.
Keep up the great work!
Having major problems switching between portrait and landscape mode. Icons/widgets are not properly spaced in landscape and screen is blank after switching back to portrait unless I swipe a few times. Droid.
Disable the persistence mode until I fix it, sorry.
Hello,
With the latest ADW.Launcher (0.8.6, and 0.8.7) I cannot click on contacts from a folder on the desktop. I’m on a Froyo ROM on the Moto Droid. I get an error saying:
“The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again”
Then I have to force close, which restarts the launcher.
Any chance of getting this fixed?
This works fine on the stock launcher on the ROM, so I assume this is a problem with ADW.Launcher.
Thanks,
Joe
Can you fix the problem when you scroll to the menu button aka the one that opens up all the apps. It won’t open if I use my trackball to scroll to it. And when I press my trackball it won’t open it. I have to use the screen.
By far one of the best home replacements apps out, only thing missing is an option for static wallpaper. This is the only thing keeping me from using this as my main home, is there anything in the works for this?
Awesome home app! Would it be possible to make it so you could swipe down over the top of the screen to show the status bar and swipe up over the top of the screen to hide it? I like the status bar hidden but want it to be easily accessible. Thx!
Hi! First offen all I have to say “thank you”. ADW Launcher is simply stunning.
But since the latest update (the one I’m posting to atm), I encounter 2 problems: Icons and widgets are not properly resized in landscape mode and: If the wallpaper hack is enabled and I switch the home screen panels, after every switch the background image gets a bit darker – for half a second or so – and then gets normal again. I’ve checked it, this only happens if the wallpaper hack is enabled and even if it seems the brightness of the whole screen changes, it’s just the background image. I’m useing a Motorola Milestone with default 2.1
Sry I’ve misspelled my email adress, proper one comes with this post :)
After this update things didn’t go so well. ..Went back to 8.6
Awesome for this latest release! Its even better than Launcher Pro’s latest version!
One minor bug – After turning screen indicator ALWAYS ON (7 screen), then press the dock button (3 pages), the “7 screen” indicator still shows
Thanks for providing us such a great launcher!
would be great to incorporate a similar application to QuickDesk.
ADW excellent
greetings.
sorry for my bad English!!!!!!
confused me ..
did not mean that application(QuickDesk) but this application: Power Strip
that would be nice to implement something like Power Strip
Copper will try to donate when I can. because ADW is fantastic.
Why not just use quick desk with adw.launcher? (or does power strip have functions additional to that of quickdesk, being a paid app i’ve never used it myself?)
I did not want to talk about “QuickDesk” do not use.
Use the launcher ADW + PowerStrip.
in many launchers the dockbar is “sliding”
I think that would be useful that the dockbar (ADW) has something like PowerStrip.
with PowerStrip while playing a game, and I can see the temperature of the micro, or increase the brightness of the screen without having to leave or close the game.
sorry for my English if you do not understand well: (
Great work on this app. Just downloading the latest update. Really is a massive improvement over the stock 2.1 home screen.
Thanks!
has anyone noticed more lag when swiping home screens and pinch to preview
MotoDroid with Cyanogen5.0.8
This is a great launcher application, maybe the best I ever installed, I really appreciate all the custom possibility.
To be really perfect it will be great to have an endless scrolling over workspaces (return to the first one after the last one, and the opposite).
Very great job, thanks a lot ;)
I agree, love the little arrow for the dockbar. Why remove it in the first place?
Thanks for all your work.
Hoping for a 3D version soon. Love this launcher but i miss the 3d version like launcher pro
One thing I noticed… If you have “orientation sensor” and “system persistent” enabled at the same time, icons and widgets are screwed up in landscape mode. Moto Droid stock 2.1
ADW doesnt show any apps installed on the sd after updating to FroYo FRF86.
Awesome job AnderWeb! So happy with everything..
Would love an option to be able to replace the app-drawer button with a custom icon.
Using the Froyo wide would give me 5 icons in the dockbar. (Or 3 with the normal)
Why? Many people uses Folderorganazier icons and dont use the app-drawer :-)
Great job !
Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but a suggestion.
Is there a way to allow one to hide setup app’s, reg. key’s, icons from the app draws?
I had this option with my iPhone years ago, it was useful in respect to moving app’s that were only setup, developer unlock files (from developers) from the list since they aren’t really app’s .
Example:
I have a icon for gTasks, and one for the gTask reg key, (which just sits there doing nothing).
Thanks
Hey! Love the launcher. Nice job. Great launcher. Have had few troubles with it. One question, though, and I’m not sure whether this is intended behavior or not. In previous versions, the app drawer would open back up to the page on which you were last when you started an app (at least that’s what I think I remember). I know that happens if you just close the drawer without selecting an app.
Could that feature be re-included, or, if I am mis-remembering, added?
Thanks.
On the Market it says this is open source, where exactly can I find the source?
Can you add a double-tap the desktop to get previews of screens? I know I can double tap on the home button but this takes me to the home screen first. I think Helix Launcher 2 had this functionality… it was very convenient.
I am also noticing a lag or long delay on the hide/show Notification when binding to Home screen button. It happens just after returning to the home screen after closing an app. I did not notice this delay on the previous version. I am using 0.8.7, but maybe it is resolved in 0.8.8
To clarify, it’s not so much as a delay, as it’s that it won’t hide or show unless you wait 6 or 8 seconds before you hit the Home button.
Just upgraded to 0.8.8. I am still experiencing the same issue. And it actually isn’t really a delay. After returning to the Home screen after closing an app, the first touch of the Home button does nothing. Even after waiting 30 seconds or more, you have to touch it a second time to get the show/hide the Notification to function. Moto Droid.
I HAVE A QUESTION IF YOU ACCIDENTLY MAKE THE REGULAR HOMEPAGE UR DEFAULT HOW DO YOU CHANGED IT TO ADW DEFAULT HOME PAGE? *****************please help********************
Ok. Further investigation leads me to conclude it has to do with the Back button. If you return to the Home screen via the Back button, the first press of the Home button will not show the Notification bar. It takes another touch of the Home button to do so.
Thanks for your work ^^
Is it possible that you can integrate the Nexus One style app drawer into your home replacement? I really like the 3d effect and app drawer of the Nexus One.
I HAVE A QUESTION IF YOU ACCIDENTLY MAKE THE REGULAR HOMEPAGE UR DEFAULT HOW DO YOU CHANGED IT TO ADW DEFAULT HOME PAGE? *****************please help********************
Hey I liked the close button on the dock bar. Please give option to remover. Not just taking it off. Please put it back. Ill donate if u do I promise. Thanks a loyal adw launcher user
I tried a few times to update the app in the market, but I’m unsuccessful everytime. Not sure why. Thoughts?
Current update won’t download. Will keep trying. Love the app.
Try this. Go to settings/applications/manage applications(filter-ALL)/Home/clear defaults
ty worked
I tried updating to 0.8.8 and couldn’t. Then uninstalled to try a fresh install and I still can’t install it, I really want to get this app back.
Trying to update 0.8.6 to 0.8.8 and alwsys get ‘download unsuccessful’. Any suggestions?
cannot be downloaded of the latest version. fix the bug as soon as possible.
