ADW.Launcher 0.8.7 arrived!
EDIT: 0.8.8 “bugfixes edition” released.
So after receiving a lot of reports, i’ve been fighting some issues with the new features and packed up a bugfix release on the market and on my github.
It currently fixes the issue with phone rotation when you had the “Persistence” mode enabled, some screen flickering/darkening issues when using the indicators autohide option, and the indicators showing over the app drawer issue as well, the “fade labels” drawer option is finally “properly working” and some updated/new translations.
Sorry everyone ;-)
Old post:
Hey you all :-)
Another little update for this thing.
Fixes:
- Folders now open to the whole screen again, not limited to 4×4
- FC if rotating the phone with the menu open.
- Finally fixed the “widget reappearing” bug when dropped inside ActionButtons or Dockbar
- Search widget can be resized too.
- Dockbar items now don’t get messed when launcher receives a shortcut intent.
- Rearranged settings screens.
- Hopefully some memory FCs on longpressing items.
News:
- New option to tweak Galaxy style app drawer (the horizontal one) page margins (thanks to Julian_Chu)
- You can now add unlimited icons to the dockbar and scroll through them (Read hints later).
- Desktop dots now allow faster navigation trough screens, removed the delay.
- New optional desktop indicator with 3 different styles/layouts and options (Read hints later).
- The long awaited but good for nothing “Keep launcher in memory” option (Read hints later).
Comments/Hints:
The “Keep launcher in memory” option (ADWSettings/System preferences/System persistent) uses an Activity property clearly discouraged by google, but some users find it useful… Is disabled by default, so enable it at your own risk :-)
The “unlimited dockbar icons” feature is as risky as every addition to your launcher. The more icons you add—>the more memory you use—>the more chances of getting FCs. Is the same as with widgets, etc.
While making this new feature, i found myself accidentally closing the dockbar a lot, so i’ve finally REMOVED the “close button” (the little pointing-donw arrow over the dockbar). If you want to close the dockbar, just swipe down over it . If you do it fast, you won’t accidentally “click” any icon inside.
The new desktop indicators are also an optional feature. By default the indocator shown will be the “Galaxy” indicator (Dots pager, like the samsung galaxy drawer) on top. You can switch between this one or just the typical small line moving along the bottom/top edge of your screen. You can also turn autoHide on/off or completely disable the indicators.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Since long ago, this project involves a lot of great developers/users collaborating on making this thing better/worse every release ;-). They help with translations, patches, fixes, new features….
I’d like you to know them all, and thank to all of them:

System version:
As many of you know, Cyanogen added an own system version of ADW.Launcher with custom defaults and tweaks inside his CyanogenMod rom for Nexus One/Dream/Shapphire devices.
If I wanted to release a system version, i would be forced to make one build for cyanogenrom users (well, 2 cause of the mdpi-only users), one for other “cyanogenmod based roms” users, the “alternate build” for other roms not based on cyanogenmod…. That’s a bit time consuming. My github repo has my main 3 branches usually synced, so everyone could build a version for their tastes/needs.
Other rom developers asked me for/already did integrate ADW.Launcher system version inside their roms. So he usually build from my source tree or tweak/modify it.
So depending on your rom/device/needs/tastes, etc, you can check for system builds on different sites:
- xda-developers forum (usually inside Nexus One Android development board)
- Dr_Cloverdale “repo”.
- Pershoot droid basement custom builds.
- inFECT BOX23 Mirror
What is going on with the update..? I uninstalled then tried too reinstall and that is not working.. Please fix so I can have this launcher back..
when phone calls come in, sometimes they get dropped, sometimes they don’t show the name of the caller, and sometimes it doesn’t play the correct ringtone. otherwise, this is a great app.
Please make the back key close the dockbar :)
what is the PREVIEW function and how do I view it on tmobile mytouch??? please email me. mr3663@Gmail.com thanks!
Hi, I found that you internal wallpaper position different from the original wallpaper. The top of your internal wallpaper should start from the top of the screen, not under the status bar. The problem that is not look nice is because: when I lock/wake the screen it shows the original wallpaper, then I unlock it show the launcher’s wallpaper and it position differently. Please fix it :-)
Can I second SnZ’s request concerning the status bar? I like hiding the status bar, but still want to be able to swipe/pull it down. Is that possible?
Thanks. This launcher is great.
ADW is fantastic. Fast, easy to use, and I have yet to see it FC unlike my last launcher.
Keep up the great work.
I do have 2 issues.
1. Whenever I come off the docking station, the phone is in the “dead” call screen (like a call just ended but the touch UI is dead), When I hit home I get home, but the UI is slow and the desktop appears a little bit at a time similar to just after a reboot. I am guessing that ADW is being unloaded when the phone is docked, then has to reload.
2. When you hide icon labels, foldeer labels are also hidden. If you have more than one folder there is no indication as to which folder is which.
Again keep up the great work.
Thanks
Michael
+1 to Mikey’s #2, would like to see an option to display Labels on Folders.
There’s more to this, though. There are 2 other things I use that could use labels on the icons: Contact shortcuts and Audio Manager Profile shortcuts. Contact shortcuts (without a picture) are a little different because the android is rotated a little, but it would still help to have a label. AM Profile shortcuts are all identical.
Any chance of getting a per-icon option to display label or not?
I hv been using ADW since 0.7 hit the market and it’s always been snappy on my Nexus One Froyo. After updating to 0.88 the redraw of widgets on home screen after exiting apps is SO SLOW. Too bad I don’t hv a backup of 0.87…. Would u please look into this issue? Thx.
FYI, I only hv 5 widgets distributed into 3 screens, 3 app shortcut in the app dock, and ~200mb RAM available. Same setting as it was in 0.87.
Thanks for the great launcher!
Um…. Thing is, it doesn’t happen all the time, for the past few minutes it behaved quite well, smooth zoom back to the home screen while exiting the app….. Strange.
Temporary solution:
Enable System persistence
Result:
No more slow redraw of widgets (so far)
Strange, I never had to enable that option b4…
Is there any drawback enabling it? e.g. battery drain?
Hi,
I just started using ADW and switched from Launcher pro. This launcher really is fast and stable and highly configurable. Great Job. I just gave you some beer money, so enjoy it.
I have one minor issue: I like to have a picture frame in one of my screens, but is does not show it. I can place the widget, it then lets you select a pictue but when you return to the home screen, there is no picture frame.
Other than that, keep up the good work.
Regards Hein
thanks for the great job. can u make an option to ” resize widgets ” when u hold press at the end of any widgets u can be able to resize it that would be amazing ..
Great launcher. Best out there and I pimp it a lot. Couple of minor things. I use the 6 “hidden” icons under the dock bar at the bottom (love this feature). The sensitivity of swiping can be tweaked. If you can detect someone has this hidden bar, then make the requirement to activate the Apps shortcut as a longer press to distinguish between a swipe and Apps activation. Also, would be nice if you could just swipe “up” again to get back to the dockbar, vs swiping down, which doesn’t work that well.
Beautiful widget, cal widget, some other widgets stop updating after the update… Didn’t hv problem with 0.87…
I love this launcher but it seems at every update it seems more unstable and more fc. I think the last version 8.6 I never had a fc.
I think like the other launcher out there it has gotten a bit bloated and unstable.
Google said “Declined” to my suggestion, but you might think it’s a good one:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=8787&can=1&q=uninstall&colspec=ID%20Type%20Status%20Owner%20Summary%20Stars
This feature has been here long time ago: try dragging the icon to the trash and hold there for 2 sec, there u go.
The swipe down to close the dockbar isnt functioning. Motorola Droid Froyo FRF57.
Latest version causes a number of random force closes on my X10…is there anyway to get a previous version of the app?

Hope the unstable problems can be fixed soon
I have a dumb question.
Once I pull up the dockbar, how do I close it and get the bar with the appdrawer??
It would be nice if you could switch between the two. I would like to actually have the dockbar be the default, with the option to pull up the appdrawer bar.
Thanks!
Any example of widgets not updating is, I shut the screen off last night at 2am, and when I woke up at 9am and turned on the screen to check the time, the clock in Beautiful Widgets said 2am, while the status bar clock told the right time.
Even at the moment, while the status bar says 10:10am, the Beautiful Widgets Clock says 9:44am, just was the time I launched the 3g watchdog widget, and when I exit the app, I saw a slow redraw of the screen AND the Beautiful Widgets clock got updated.
This was with the setting Wallpaper Hack on, Screen cache On (lag when disabled), and System Persistence On.
At the moment I will revert back to 0.87, which didn’t hv this problem on me. Thanks.
When trying to slide the center action button up, the dock bar completely disappears. You don’t have a restart option in settings either so I had to reboot the phone. Please fix this.
Loving ADW.Launcher more and more, but do have a few suggestions/issues:
1. The new scrolling dockbar is great, but is there any way you can add the ability to manually re-order the icons in the dockbar? Currently I have to remove all the apps and start fresh if I want to place an app at (or near) the front of the bar (unless I’m missing something).
2. I somewhat liked the old drag-down button on the dockbar for closing it. No I find myself inadvertently launching apps far more than I did before. Any chance of adding an option to bring back the old dockbar close button, or alternatively allowing the back hardware button to close it?
Otherwise, you’re doing an awesome job! Please, keep it up.
Keeps fc’ing after rash of recent updates
Your launcher is great! But I always get FC of the phone & message. My phone is Samsung Galaxy I7500 with 1.6. rom.
One little thing I’ve noticed is that if you go into settings and set sliding paginal as the desktop indicator, then if you go into your app drawer (if you have the galaxy type 1) the indicators for the screen will be dots not the sliding paginal thing…just pointing it out. It would be nice if that had its own setting to whether it was a sliding paginal on top, or bottom, or if it was dots
Great work, a request for the next release would’ve been to be able to hide the scrolling list that appears while scrolling in the app drawer.
Regarding: System persistent/Activity
1) Odd that the main OS interface is allowed to be killed, would be like Windows killing explorer and the user having to wait for it to load and refresh the icons when the minimize an application.
2) Some ‘apps’ causes the ADW launcher to take forever to load, this is why people are wanting the persistent state. If you could find a solution to why load times can increase to 20secs by just putting a few app icons on the desktop then ‘persistent’ might not be necessary.
3) From your notes I see you assume users are having slow load times with 7 screens and tons of icons; however, I can put a few icons on two screens and have the load time go to 20sec or more.
4) Based on 2 and 3, it seems that either the launcher is not properly saving a cache state as the OS expects and is reloading the setting with the OnCreate or there is a bug with reloading the content of the cache that is as slow or equally slow to starting your launcher from scratch.
5) When terminated by the OS, the launcher should have a Cache state that does not require a full enumeration of the settings and the App icons, etc, right?
I haven’t had a chance to look at any code, so my points are questions based on assumptions.
However, there is a problem when the launcher can take so long to load, and I’m not sure if it is a problem with it being specific ‘apps’ on the launcher screen or an error that is occuring the configuration. I know it is not widget related, as I don’t run any widgets or even the Google search widget.
I like the work you are doing and plan on supporting the project as it matures a bit. Until the load time is fixed or a cache state is implemented I will use the System persistent setting.
The dock dot indicator doesn’t disappear when change it in settings.
Also, in the galaxy drawer menu I keep choosing applications instead of swapping left or right.

Amway its still great application.
From last update laucher always rebuild when i go back by pressing home button. Widget number is the sam
thank you for this great launcher! can you add hide dockbar when clicking back button? its not used now. the swipe thing is a little too difficult.
Getting slower and slower. Whenever I go back to home screen there is about a twenty second wait for it to stabilize . Sucks
this release seems a bit fast but many a times the widgets stop updating and responding… specially the power management & facebook widget… Any fix cumming for that soon?
1) It’s nearly immpossible for me to close dockbar by sliding over it. It was difficult with arrow button, but now it’s just impossible. May be working sliding from any point on the screen down to the border should be much better. Dockbar shoud have possibility to rearrange buttons.
2) Setting for action buttons should be reworked – now we have 4 separate setting: dots, LAB, RAB, additional LAB and RAB. And we need just one setting – mode select: 2 buttons with dots, 2 button without dots, 4 button. Strange names LAB and RAB should be removed also. To be honest, i’d like to see it the way as it’s done in LauncherPro – simple and very powerfull.
3) I still think that pressing Home on settings screen should show home screen, not preview :)
Maybe you could contribute with some code for all those things, imho thats the meaning of an opensource project.
hi, the ‘power control’ widget stoped responding. Does work on stock launcher.
Thanks.
did an uninstall and reinstall to see if it helped the speed. it didnt. also, i used the backup and restore feature. widgets appear as “problem loading widget”. bummer. it almost works. i dont have many, but it would be nice to think you saved everything and when you restore it, it ALL comes back
Amazing work. This is by far he best app on android. I can only think two things that may help improve it. One would be to add the transition animations for selecting and exiting an app, and the second would be the ability to pick apps to be removed or hidden from the app drawer since things like font packs don’t need to be in there.
For the first time I am beginning to have problems with ADW. After placing my moto Droid in the dock station for a period of time ADW tends to freeze and stop responding when I take the unit off the docking station
Keeps resetting / crashing when exiting from camera apps (neoreader and camera app) since 0.8.8 on x10 mini
Disable the Persistence option
Please!! Add the 3d app drawer like on the nexus one !! Launcher pro has it but I dont like their home replacement !!! Please add the 3d app drawer in the next update !!!
Please bring back drawer transparency.it looks awful without it. Or can i switch back to a later version?
Also there is a delay of the lab icons appearing when I hit home. I ve never seen this issue before with the previous versions.
Could you please give us an option for enabling/disabling the close button for the app.dockbar. I am disabled and it is difficult and frustrating to me trying to close it. I know someone will say all you have to do is swipe down but when your hands are arthritic it is difficult to get a nice clean swipe, and my wife is tired of hearing Pandora play for a couple of seconds while I fumble around closing it, then to have it come back on whilw I try to close the bar. Thank You very much for your work it is appreciated by thousands and thousands!
This is the best Launcher, but missing one feature that i really miss from Advanced Launcher, the ability to hide apps.is there a way you can make that for ADW?
