ADW.Launcher 0.8.5 released!

(Give baby) One more time! :P
Ok, this update provides the following new features/fixes:

News:

  • New options to hide app drawer labels AND enable/disable the animation fading for them.
  • New option to turn off scrollable widget support (some users noticed laggier desktop scrolling, so if you don’t intend to use a scrollable widget, you can leave this disabled until the group finds and solves the current problems :) NOTE: if you want scrollable widget support, ENABLE it, it’s disabled by default.
  • New step when adding widgets. A dialog will open and let you setup the number of columns/rows the widget will span.  I’m explaining this later :-)

Fixes:

  • After setting desktop screen number, the default screen slider was incorrect.
  • Removed some extra log statements not really needed.
  • Minor fixes.

Ok, now let’s clarify a few things about widgets, screen columns/rows and the new feature:

  1. Widgets are designed/coded for a specific MINIMUM pixels width/heigh combined with a number of spanning CELLS (you know, 4×1,3×3, etc)
  2. If you change your desktop columns/rows, you are making each desktop CELL smaller, so widgets shrink to fit into the desired number of cell spans.
  3. I started a way of auto-converting widgets sizes to acomodate then inside a modified desktop layout, but doing this widgets would end up ocuppying the same screen/pixel amount.
  4. So i decided to allow users select the layout they prefer for each widget upon inserting them.

So I’ve ended up with this:

¿¿What does that mean??

That you can, as you are going to add a widget, select the number of CELLS (columns/rows) it will occupy.

So for example, if you take the standard android analog clock (2×2) and select it to be a 1×1 widget, it will shrink/cut itself to fit inside your selected area.

Warning!

  • This is NOT going EVERY widget to display correctly, some wodgets uses different scaling methods, different layouting methods and a lot of things i cannot control. Try to play with the “Auto Stretching” option and with the widget size until you’re satisfied with the result.

SUPERWARNING!

A lot of people complaints that since lasts releases they’re geting some (more) forcecloses/system lag… And then they say me they’re on a 7 screens desktop, with each screen being a 6×5 grid and they’re using about 15 different widgets….
C’mon guys, widgets eat RAM, the more widgets, the more chances you end up with an OutOfMemoryError (just an FC).

Oh, almost forgot: The ram allowed for a single app is LIMITED by android (it dones not depend on your PHONE RAM) so DON’T TRUST your free phone ram!!! The OutOfMemoryError will FC your launcher if you add a lot of stuff into it even having hundreds of free Mb RAM!!!

Only you can tweak and play with your device to see “how much it will support“, but when you push it to the limit, don’t blame google, your phone manufacturer, or myself…. seriously :P

System versions:

Warning!!!: If you’re not on a rooted phone, don’t use this. Use market version instead.

Warning!!!: If you’re running latest cyanogenmod roms, you’ll need to “push” this file overwriting the ADWlauncher.apk on /system/app/

Warning!!!: If you’re running android 1.6 this won’t work.

Warning!!!: If you’re having problems running this on your phone, try the file marked as “alternate build”

Warning!!!: Using this will REMOVE your stock android launcher, so make a backup first!

Warning!!!: If you don’t understand what previous warnings mean, DON’T USE THIS.

For use in latests cyanogenmod 5.0.8-testX
adb push ADWLauncherxxxxx.apk /system/app/ADWLauncher.apk

For use in cyanogenmod 5.0.7x and other eclair roms
adb push ADWLauncherxxxxx.apk /system/app/Launcher.apk

If you don’t know howto use adb, or prefer flashing through recovery, stay tunned to xda threads or my twitter, I’m sure someone will make a “flashable zip”.

Ok, now the downloads:

Enjoy!

For anyone who experiences force crashes after installing 0.8.5, I uninstalled the last version I was running (0.8.4) before reinstalling 0.8.5 from the market.

Loving the new multi row/col widgetry =)

When i push this new Version i have 2 entrys with settings.
In the menu and when i push the menu button on the Homescreen.
Can i remove the settings when i push the menu button on the Homescreen?

I’m not yet seeing it in the Market on my X10…. And it does say, “This does not work on Donut”….

Is there not going to be a standalone-Donut version of this? or is Market very very screwy again?

    :-(

    • If you have a rooted phone try my system versions….if not I’ll upload the market-version tomorrow.

Do you think you could add an option to keep AWD in memory ?

having it killed causes some random home/widget redraws

(i have 7 homes, but i have things only in 3, not THAT man widgets, 4 in the main one, 1 on each of the others)

Nice update. Glad you figured out the widget resizing. Now people can use BeautifulWidgets (and others) if they want with more columns/rows for icons without problems. That was the only real problem I saw with 0.8.2. Overall, nice additions. Plan on adding a 3D app drawer option at any point?

So this is the android equivalent of jumping the shark. AWN – making sure all widgets look like crap!

      • AbsoluteZero
      • June 18th, 2010 1:12am

It was actually beneficial for some widgets. They were not showing up correctly when the number of columns was increased. It’s not ONLY for stretching/shrinking. If you don’t believe me try 0.8.2 and BeautifulWidgets.

you know how you can map the home button to different things? I wish this were for holding it down instead of just pressing it. please add hold-down-home to go into standby.. that would be sooo awesome! no more having to hit the power button. :)

Seems it had to do with loading the beta of Pure Message Widgets. Once I uninstalled that, and uninstalled/reinstalled ADW – everything was working again. I did the backup before uninstalling, and when I restored settings and desktop after re-installing, everything came back nicely except I had to reload all the widgets (the had place holders saying problem loading widget)… fyi… back up and running now, including the background for the all apps button. ;)

I too am having FC issues whenever I try to add a widget. Installed and reinstalled and worked for a while, but came back before I could finish adding everything back. Running Cyanogen 5.0.7.1 on a Nexus One with the included kernel and no overclocking. Have tried playing around with various settings in the launcher but no direct link located so far. Great work so far though. Keep up the amazing work!

Hi there, thx for the great work on a great launcher. The best launcher ive tried.
I have one request though – is it posible to lock the screen, so that you cannot move widgets and shortcuts around or add them.

It would be awsome so that ppl couldnt, by mistake, screw ones setup up.

    thx in advance

Am getting constant fc on stock nexus one when ever i try to add a widget, attempted reinstall but fc returned soon after and now I’m stuck wigetless. Is there an apk around for previous version so can revert for time being. Also maybe useful to add option to disable widget size setting so can still add widgets normally when errors occur.
    Thanks

Love the ADW, but having issues with latest release! Got fc when adding widgets (I’m not having more then 10). So I followed some instructions above, and reinstalled and restored settings. Had to manually add all widgets over again, but started force closing after 10 widgets.

I had 13 widgets without any problem on the last version. I thought maybe it was because of the beautiful live wallpaper, but no, after reinstall I tried with a different paper.

thanks for all your hard work.
I love ADW launcher, but after installing it, my camera doesn’t work anymore!.
when I take pictures, I can only see a black screen (in gallery mode it shows an error icon).

    What can it be?
    without ADW launcher is perfect.
    I’m on a 1.6 Android with Galax0 ROM.

    Thanks.

      • June 18th, 2010 10:26pm

I have galax0 also and I had the same problem.
I solved it by removing 2 widgets that eat RAM (internal memory widget and SD memory widget).

Also, I changed Advanced Task killer for Auto Memory Manager. It kills useless apps automatically, it’s great.

Now the dialer opens instantly, it’s great.
I hope it helps you. It’s all about RAM.

ADW is my favorite launcher- but 0.8.5 now causes FC when adding any widget on my Droid. When you have the time could you look into this. Looking forward to .8.6.

Hi, this launcher is the best i have ever tried. The new widget thing is fantastic and i love the high customizability ( does this word exist?). The only thing missing right now for me is kinetic scralling between the homescreens. If i swype slow, then it should move the screen slowly too and if i flick across the screen it should change just as fast. Like that i wouldnt have to set the scralling speed, i would determin it every time i change the screens.

Sorry for my bulky english, i’m trying my best.

I’m loving this but after the last update I’m getting some fc with the system panel app. Where after I place the widget, afterwards I just get fc when trying to place other widgets afterwards?

Everything else works great…strange. It there some incompatibility issues with the app?

    • Steve H.
    • June 18th, 2010 8:03pm

Seems alot of folks are getting the FC’s when trying to add widgets after running for awhile. The FC I get happens when I exit the widget’s wizard – its supposed to jump to your widget span config input as shown above – but it never gets there. Thats where the FC happens for me.

    • Dave
    • June 18th, 2010 9:04pm

Same add widget FC here (Droid 2.2 – ADW 0.8.5). Tried desktop col/row 4/4, 5/5 and same FC behavior. Span config input didn’t appear and FC popup instead. Otherwise, it’s been great. Thanks!

It seems like the system info widget is causing the launcher to crash. Only way is to delete the widget or reboot and it goes back to normal again. Pls fix.

Nice launcher and switched to it from tag home which is nice. I liked their app folders, would be nice addition.

Last update have issues with widgets doubling when changing screen formats, even after deleting current widget. I can drag the duplicate to trash so no bigger. Also phone has jumped into the phone app and started dialing for no reason. It asked to FC and did that which seemed to clear it up. It seems to happen after screen locks. A bit laggy on reboot.

I like the fixes to the drawer tab! Tying the home button to the dock was a good thing.
